2 hearts crossed, one was taken...

Third Verse

I was sitting on the stool at the balcony in Lynn's apartment that
Saturday morning, talking to a guy who meant nothing, trying not to
remind myself of what happened last night. In truth, I couldn't. No, it
just kept coming. As a matter of fact, half the time I didn't really
pay much attention to him or our conversation, just like I didn't
really paid much attention last night when I took a spin in your car
with him and later lost control of myself over a song we both enjoyed
once upon a time ago, me... and you. I still remember the first time I
met him, Kay, at the station waiting for you. But it wasn't him I
remember, it was... It was Monday, the day after a night's badgering
from Lynn and I asked you out for dinner to finally clear things out
between us both and try to get things back to how we used to be. But
you cancelled.

Kay was talking about one of the funny things that happened with Lynn
during one of their photo shooting outings but I couldn't hear him
quite clearly, why did I threw a question and stopped him from leaving?
I didn't know, probably I wanted to stay away from being alone for a
moment, though alone I was, traveling in my mind, remembering. I kept
replaying what happened, when you cancelled the dinner and I said there
was still tomorrow, telling myself all the while that it was just a
minor setback for us to set things right again, a minor setback.
Tuesday, you cancelled again, a family dinner this time. Then
Wednesday, you couldn't even come to pick me up. Then Thursday, the
second time I met Kay, the fourth time you cancelled...

“Listen...”

“I know, you can't go dinner again, can you?”

“I'm sorry.”

“It's okay, though I really do want to talk to you.”

“I'll make it up to you tomorrow night, I swear.”

Did you really? Did things happen the way I thought they'd happened?
Before Friday evening landed her solemn presence, Liam called me.

“There's something I need to tell you.” his voice sounded a little bit
more serious than usual.

“What? You finally came to your senses and want to have Lynn back?”

“No. It's... it's serious, it's about Damon.”

“Okay”, I said, paying a little more attention. “What about Damon?”

“He's... going to break up with you... tonight.”

Did I pause? ... Did I stop? ... Did I freeze? Perhaps, maybe, I
couldn't remember. Didn't want to remember?

“What did you say?”

How long does it take to accept facts? Forever maybe. Some facts you
come by in your life are beyond expectations, and beyond... everything,
guess I finally understood how the American President felt when he
first heard the news of the planes crashing into WTC: blank, plain
blank.

“Could you... run me through what you just said just... one more time?”

Of course I heard him; it's just that part of me that refused to listen,
to know. At the end of Liam's phone call, my mind had hit the
off-switch, without a single question, without a single answer. The
restaurant near the college was buzzing, people in, people out, people
talk, people laugh, people watching the TV, people eat... but I
couldn't hear a thing, not a sound, not a voice, not a word. I walked
blankly to class, sat blankly in class, went blankly to the station,
marched blankly into the train, then, I saw Kay.

“Hey.” He said.
