a story i did just at the spur of the moment. it's more sad than happy.

The Willow Tree

“Do you ever wonder how that Willow tree came to live in the

center of the river?” Annabelle asked. She and Leo were sitting by a

shallow part of a massive, yet elegant, river. Annabelle lay down on her

stomach, her head in her hands, with a dreamy look on her face. Leo sat

beside her. Leo was 29 years old and Annabelle was 27, but they were

still spirited enough to come to the river every morning.

“I do remember a story about the Willow tree,” Leo said, half to

himself. He watched with hope at Annabelle’s dream-like eyes twinkled

with delight.

“Tell me the story, please,” She pleaded. Leo nodded.

“There once was a beautiful peasant girl and a young, charming

farm boy,” he began, “like us,” he chimed. Annabelle’s faraway
look made

him frown. “The two of them were madly in love,” Leo paused.
Annabelle

looked at him curiously.

“Like us?” She asked. Leo nodded.

“The two romantics came here every morning, to this very spot.

On one occasion, the peasant girl sprang into the river; her cotton red

gown pocketing air and making her look like a floating costume. The boy

jumped in after her and clutched her hips to keep her from drifting off

with the current. The two glided across the water gracefully, knowing

that they were made for each other. It was then that the farmer’s boy

proposed,” Leo said and watched as Annabelle’s lips formed a pleased

smile.

“The peasant girl, on the following week, came to the river with

a pot in her hands. In the pot were soil and a single seed. She told the

boy that her mother had given a task to him. He was to raise the seed in

the river. If it lived for three months, he’d be allowed to have the

peasant girl’s hand in marriage. The boy took the challenge, for he

never turned one down; nor did he ever give up. Now it has grown into

this small Willow tree. They’ve been married eleven years,” Leo
said,

his voice dreamy for once.

“What happened after they got married?” Annabelle asked

thoughtfully.
