“They lived happily for three wonderful years. Everyday, they

would come to the river to check on the willow tree. It was always a

wonder that even the tree never drifted from its spot in the river.

After the three years, though, came a disaster. The peasant girl had

been pregnant with a son, who was to be named Leo. Sadly, the child was

stillborn and died shortly after birth. The happy couple turned for the

worst,” Leo said grimly. Annabelle sighed.

“Tell me more.”

“The young peasant girl forgot everything. She forgot her name,

her husband, and her past. She was so scared that she simply lost her

memory,” Leo said sorrowfully. “The farmer’s boy tried everything,
but

with no success. He finally decided to just continue taking her to the

river, to see if she could remember; to see if she could remember the

Willow tree.”

Annabelle stood up and brushed grass from her crimson gown. Leo

stood up, too, and took her arm to lead her home. “I hope, one day,
she

remembers,” Annabelle said hopefully.

Gently, so that no one could hear, Leo whispered, “I hope you do,
too.”
