The Cat and the Cockatiel By Rich Eubanks “Squawk..., squawk.” Buddy the cockatiel screeched in that mocking tone. “Dumb kitty-kitty..., dumb. Can't climb anything.” Opie had only been in the family for a few weeks. His adoptive mommy had gotten him from a young girl at the grocery store who had him and his brother and sister kittens in a box to give away. He had really been too young and his new mommy and daddy had to feed him with a tiny bottle. Opie had settled in quickly to his new home and loved his new parents as well as Chuckie the small dog. But Buddy the cockatiel just wouldn't like Opie. Buddy made fun of him and pointed out everything that Opie did wrong. “Squawk..., squawk. Dumb kitty-kitty..., dumb. Don't know where the sandbox is.” Buddy screeched at poor little Opie when Opie had an accident and had to be carried to the litter box. “Meow..., why do you make fun of me all the time?” Opie asked Buddy. “Squawk..., squawk.” Buddy answered as he looked down from his high perch in the corner of the living room. “It's my nature kitty-kitty. After all I am a cockatiel.” Opie turned and walked away. He was feeling a little angry at Buddy but as soon as he saw Chuckie he forgot about Buddy and ran to the couch where Chuckie was napping. Opie stopped just before the couch and quietly climbed up using his little claws to hold on. When he made it to the top he leaped into the air and down right on top of poor little Chuckie. “Pesky kitten,” Chuckie growled as he was rudely awakened by Opie..., but quickly smiled at his new little brother, “So..., you want to play rough huh?” Chuckie turned around and did a flip causing Opie to fall off of the couch. This time when Opie climbed back up Chuckie was ready and pushed him off again. This continued until Opie finally gave up climbing up and then Chuckie jumped down to the floor and the two brothers had a grand wrestling match. “Squawk..., squawk,” Buddy screeched as Opie was being scolded for climbing the house plants, “Dumb kitty-kitty..., dumb. Can't remember what he's supposed to not do.” “Meow,” Opie looked up at Buddy on his high perch, “why do you always make fun of me?” “Squawk..., squawk,” Buddy answered in his shrill voice, “it's my nature kitty-kitty, after all I am a cockatiel.” Opie looked up at Buddy on his high perch. Opie was growing fast but the perch was awfully high. Maybe when he was big enough he could jump up there and make friends with Buddy. Opie was still a kitten and just wanted to be friends with everyone..., even Buddy. “Squawk..., squawk,” Buddy watched as Opie was scolded for climbing the Christmas tree, “dumb kitty-kitty..., dumb. Been here six months and still don't know to stay out of plants.” “Meow,” Opie looked up at Buddy on his high perch, “this plant is new and looks so pretty with all the nice things hanging on it. I was just looking at all the pretty things..., I didn't know I wasn't supposed to climb it. Why do you still make fun of me?” “Squawk..., squawk,” Buddy laughingly replied, “it's my nature kitty-kitty. After all, I am a cockatiel.” Christmas was fun for everyone. Buddy got a fruit treat in the shape of a little Christmas tree. Chuckie got a red and green sweater. And Opie got a toy mouse. He loved playing with his little toy mouse but it made him think about real mice..., after all he was almost grown now. “Squawk..., Squawk,” Buddy screeched in his usual scolding tone, “dumb kitty-kitty..., dumb. Shouldn't be up on the table.” Click here to read the rest of this story (25 more lines)
