Despite the lost of a ship, the ease of victory seems suspicious.

Chapter Six - "Much Ado About Nothing"

Captain's Log, Stardate 1732.5, The Enterprise has returned to the
Neutral Zone to find that the Romulans launched a surprise attack of
their own. With the loss of the last Warbird, communication between the
ships became possible. Their jamming capabilities are quite remarkable.
Admiral Komack was critically wounded in the Romulan attack. Commodore
Wesley is the senior officer and we are awaiting his ship, the
Lexington, as well as the Yorktown and the Constellation to return.
Wesley, Decker, and Shultz experienced the same identical greetings in
Romulan territory that we had. They should all be here within the half
hour.

The Hood has returned and Captain Uda has revealed that a spy was on his
ship. If there was one, there are probably more. I have ordered all
ships to be on security alert until Wesley returns. The Hoods photon
torpedo bays are destroyed, leaving them only with phaser capability,
otherwise his ship is fully operational. Captain Diaz has reported that
both warp and impulse drives on the Excalibur have been severely
compromised by the Romulan attack. They have one working phaser and
torpedo bay. Although all damage is repairable, it will take several
days for the Excalibur to be a viable battleship again. The Potemkin is
another matter. The Hood, Excalibur and Enterprise have transported the
crew off of the crippled vessel. Mr. Scott is aboard with a team of
engineers trying to restore power to our sister ship. I expect an
update shortly. And it is my sad duty to report, that The Republic was
lost. Captain Morgan Williams and his crew have perished.

ENTRERPRISE:

Kirk hit the Log button to close his entry. “Spock?”

“Aye, Sir?” he replied, without taking his eyes off his viewer.

“I want you to gather all the sensor and visual readings together to
show Commodore Wesley when he arrives. I don't believe this was ‘the'
attack. Something isn't quite right here,” he said, as he leapt from
his chair. “I'll be in my quarters. When Scott reports in, route it
down,” he said, as he headed to the turbo lift.

************

Kirk entered his quarters and sat on his bunk, staring at the door.
After a few minutes, he walked into the head and splashed water on his
face. He toweled away the water and sat at his desk. He flipped a
switch.

“Captain's personal Log, Stardate 1732.5.” He took a deep breath and
continued. “My friend, Morgan Williams, and four hundred and twenty
four of his crew mates, died today. If I had figured out this Romulan
deception sooner, The Republic may still be here among us, instead of a
marker buoy attesting to the fact of their existence and demise. Ben
Komack was critically wounded when a piece of plastiform was blown into
his back, severing his spine in the Romulan attack. I have explained to
Bob Wesley about my theory that this is all a decoy and there is indeed
a fleet on it's way to Earth, but he feels that I'm misinterpreting
what happened. He feels confident that THIS was the attack, and it was
repulsed. I've asked him to have his science officer, and those on the
other ships in the excursion, review their sensor readings of when the
Warbird they encountered decloaked. On a side note, I have recommended
a commendation for Ensign Chekov for arming and firing the photons
needed to destroy the Romulan weapon and vessel, in record time, saving
The Excalibur.”

The Bosun's whistle was heard over the Comm system.

“Bridge to Captain Kirk.”

Kirk snapped a switch. “Go ahead, Nyota.”

The Captain's use of her first name startled her. She didn't think he
remembered what it was. She regained her composure and replied, “Mr.
Scott on the Potemkin, Sir.”
