Chapter Five "Let the Game Begin"

THE ROMULAN FLAGSHIP VICTORIOUS:

Sub Commander Pok hurried to the Fleet Commander's quarters. He reached
the door and hurriedly pushed the call button.

“Come,” was the response, as the door slid open.

“Commander Turvan, I have excellent news!” exclaimed the Romulan
equivalent to a ‘Captain'.

Turvan was busy looking at a sensor display in front of him. “I hope
that means your staff can interpret the readings we are getting while
the cloak is activated,” replied the Romulan equivalent of an
‘Admiral'.

“Yes, Sir. We believe that all seventeen ships have slipped right under
the Earth ships defenses, even as they sent four ships into the Neutral
Zone. As ordered, The Victorious and fourteen other ships are on their
way to Earth. The other two are headed to the planet of our ancient
oppressors,” stated an excited Pok, as he thumped his chest in salute.

“Are you certain all seventeen ships made it? With the cloak operating,
most of our scans are bounced back. You may be looking at reflections,”
said Turvan, pointing to his sensor readout.

Pok failed to look at his Commander. Instead he stared fiercely ahead.
“No, we are not certain. But we believe we count sixteen reflections
that are similar to, but not our own.”

Turvan looked back at the readout. “I must yield to others with more
expertise than I. Very well, has anyone broken radio silence?”

“No, Commander.”

Turvan stood and faced Pok. “Soon we will know if our little ruse has
worked. We will need that advantage if we are to succeed in destroying
the home world of the aliens that confined us to the small area of
space we call home. Our ancient oppressors will be destroyed simply
because they do not believe in violence. They will be defenseless. It
is time to send the order for the second wave of the attack.” He looked
at the time display on his sensor readout. “Soon we will know.”

Captain's Log, Stardate, 1731.9, The Enterprise is now retuning to the
Neutral Zone at maximum warp. Remus was a six-hour trip and the return
trip will take just as long. By that reckoning, if the five remaining
starships at the Zone haven't stopped the Romulan invasion fleet, they
will have a twelve-hour jump on us.

ENTERPRISE:

“Uhura, have you raised any ship in the Fleet yet?” asked a determined
Kirk.

“I'm sorry, Sir. We're still being jammed.”

“Of course we are,” said Kirk to himself. “Mr. Sulu, how long before we
reach the Neutral Zone?”

“We still have two hours and fifty minutes to go at warp 8,” he replied,
studying his readouts.

Kirk stood and walked over to Scott. Scott saw him coming.

“I canna give you any more, Sir. We're at maximum output,” replied the
Scotsman.

“What if we stand down from Red Alert?” asked Kirk, trying to think of a
