Suddenly David and Nick were at her sides.

"Jack, are you okay?" Nick begged desperately. She smiled weakly at him
and shook her head no. She knew the truth and she felt at peace with
the knowledge.

"Nick, David, I'm going home at last. You can all rest in peace," she
whispered.

"What do you mean?" David grabbed her hands in desperation.

"I love you David but it wasn't meant to be. I was sent here for one
purpose and now that I have accomplished my mission, I can go home. I
can be with everyone else who is already there but now I can truly be
with my heavenly father," she sighed with relief. She wouldn't have to
experience any more pain or anger, she would be free.

"What about your family here?" Nick inquired, grasping for straws to
keep her on earth with him.

"I love them and I know that they love me but they are mostly already in
Heaven. Only my granny is alive and she cannot do much for me. I
really had no family life so now I will have a place where I belong, a
place with a father who will never leave me nor hurt me in any way. I
will be waiting. Farewell, and I love you both," she closed her eyes
as if to sleep. She knew where she was going and she rushed forward
with her arms open, at least in spirit.

"No Jack, please stay with me. I made a mistake and I need you," David
sobbed into her sweater. There was no response nor any movement from
his heart's true desire.

"Please, come back to me. I love you and I cannot imagine the rest of
my life without you by my side," he begged but he looked up through
teary eyes at her face only to see the snow collecting around the
corner of her lips, eyes, and nose. Her lips were slightly parted as
if to breathe but he knew there was no more breath from those soft lips
ever again. She was even smiling as if she were glad to go. He knew
that she was and it hurt, not as much as the fact, he would never hold
her close to him again.

He looked to the sky and screamed with grief, "Why?" Nick sat in the
snow, by Jack's body, frozen by a hurt he had never known. His heart
went out to David who was hysterical but mostly, he wanted to bring her
back. He had never met anyone who had left such an impact on his life
and now she was gone, as if she had never really existed. He wondered,
because of how wonderful and special she was, if she were not an angel
sent to guard them from an unspeakable evil and now that she was done,
she could go back to Heaven.

"David, we need to go get someone," he whispered.

"She was, she, I want her back," David moaned and he lay in the snow
next to her stiff body. He gripped her hands in his and in his heart
knew that she would be by his side always and he felt peace inside the
turmoil of his soul.

Brenda lay, looking at the ceiling, her breath shallow and hollow
sounding. She knew that Jack was dead, it had happened in her dream.
Jack had fought an evil at camp, conquered it, and died doing so.

She rolled over and called Tyson.

"Hello," his husky voice answered.

She barely keep her voice steady, "Jack is dead!"

"What do you mean?" he was immediately aware and alert sounding.

"I dreamt it and I know it to be true. She was sorry in the end and we
were friends, even though we never physically admitted it," she
replied, tears forming in her eyes and she became aware of how much she
missed Jack.

"Call her guardian and see. I mean, it was just a dream," he whispered,
trying to prove it to her but she knew the truth.

"She's at camp. She doesn't get back until tomorrow. They'll be
sending her home in a box. Tonya's also gone, but she just vanished.
Oh God, Tyson, my soul sister is gone," and she broke down into tears.

"Wait until tomorrow before you grieve," he begged. He wanted her to
stop crying for she couldn't be dead, but somehow he believed her.

"Look, I'm going to go," she sobbed and hung the phone up. She knew her
best friend was dead, that she had sacrificed herself for the good of
others. It tore her up inside but she had done what was right and they
had been friends in the end, if even no one else had know it.

When it was evening of the day that Jack should have been home, she
called Jack's foster mom.

"Hello," a feminine voice answered.

"Hi Mrs. Rory. Is Jack home?" she wanted to know but she knew what the
response was.

"Is this Brenda?" the lady inquired, her voice sounding as if she had
been crying.

"Yes, is something wrong?" she was about to cry herself.

"There was a terrible accident at camp. No one knows exactly what
happened but some of the campers vanished. Jack didn't vanish but she,
oh my, please hold a second," and there was the muffled sound of sobs
and rambling before she came back on, "She died. She gave up her life.
My Jack! The funeral will be tomorrow, at six 'o' clock. Do you know
where Peterson Cemetery is?"

"Yes," Brenda began to cry and she felt as if something in her had died
with the verification.

"Can I count on you being there?" Mrs. Rory asked.

"Of course," and Brenda hung up. She leaned against the wall, torn
apart by the information. She closed her eyes and screamed as if she
were being murdered.

Eventually she called Tyson and he answered groggily, "Hello?"

"Tyson, I was right. She died up there. Her funeral is tomorrow. Oh
Tyson," she broke down again and sank to her knees.

"I'll be right over," and the phone clicked in her ear. She curled up
into a little ball and sobbed until she fell asleep.

Tyson stayed with her and they prepared for the funeral. She put on a
black dress and immediately she thought of the shopping trip for it.

It had been her and Jack and they had gone to the mall. They had been
flirting with guys and were giving out Beverly's and Amanda's phone
numbers as their own, unless they liked the guy. They had pored over
racks of clothing until they had found this dress. They had both liked
it so much that they had each bought one. Afterwards they had bought
ice cream and french fries. They ended up getting in a food fight with
this other table with about four guys and a girl. It been so much fun
and now Jack was gone forever.

She just about fell but Tyson caught her.

"Are you sure you'll be able to handle this?" he inquired.

"I have to. I'm the family that she never had and I am sure as hell
going to be there. I loved her as my own sister. They don't even know
how she died," she groaned.

"I know my baby, trust me I know," he walked her to his car because he
knew that she was in no condition to drive. The entire way there, she
gazed out the window, her silence breaking his heart. He could not
even begin to feel her pain though he hurt too. He had grown close to
Jack in the time that he had been with Brenda at camp. Even though she
had a terrible life and didn't like people, she had been awesome to
hang out with. She loved pranks and loved to laugh and make her
friends laugh. He had missed her when Brenda and her had separated and
now he would always miss her.

They arrived and sat in the back. The place was filled and she saw
David, Nick, and Jack's granny there. She even thought she saw a man
who resembled Jack. Then she realized with a start that it was her
father.

After the sermon, people were gave the chance to go up and speak about
Jack.

Brenda was the first up and she gazed over the crowd, "You people came
here to mourn Jack though none of you truly knew her. Her life was
hell and I was the only family she knew besides her granny. Even
through everything that she had gone through, she was the most caring
and generous person I ever met. She didn't care about herself but
instead made the sacrifices for everyone else. She was determined to
fight everything off and come off strong but she was actually that
strong.

I've been through some tough times and Jack was my only long term friend
who did not budge from my side. She ignored everyone else and made
sure that I survived and now that is a true friend. She always was and
I could count on her. She became my sister in a sense and now that
she's dead, I don't know what I'm going to do.

Rest well Jack. You're finally free and you made the ultimate
sacrifice. I'll be seeing you around my dear, sweet sister." She
looked at Jack's face in the casket and with a start realized that she
was in her matching black dress. That was more than she could take and
she dropped to her knees, her face to the floor. She cried and cried
and felt Tyson's arms around her. She couldn't stand it and she pushed
him away. She crawled to her deceased friend's side and hugged her for
the last time. Never again would they shop, gossip, or cry together.
Everything had came to an end.
