See if Allie is injured in this nail biting chapter! | |||
10. Double Jeopardy Connor's heart was pounding as he pulled into the driveway. His mind whirled with infinite possibilities as he frantically ascended the stairs. He took his key from his pocket and opened the door. “Allison?” there was no answer. “Allie?” still nothing, he walked into the house cautiously with his gun drawn. The only thing in the living room was the area rug, he looked around surveying the room, Allie's purse and briefcase were lying on the floor by the stairs. Then, he spotted her. She was lying by the stairs motionless. “Allie! Can you hear me? Open your eyes, sweetness.” She was unconscious, Connor kneeled beside her and felt her forehead. She wasn't warm, he tried to assess her condition, she didn't appear to be bleeding. “Allie, wake up for me sweetness. Are you hurt? What happened, darling?” Allie continued to lay motionless. Connor was about to call an ambulance when she began to slowly regain consciousness. “Allison?” she began to open her eyes slowly. She glanced around, dazed and confused. “Allie? Are you all right?” “Where ... where am I?” “In the new house. Are you hurt? Do you remember what happened?” “I'm so tired I ...” her eyes began to close again, Connor wondered If she had a mild concussion. “Allie, stay with me. Talk to me, stay awake. What happened?” she opened her eyes and looked at him dazed. “I ... I think I slipped and hit my head. Connor, how did you get here?” her eyes looked glazed, and his concern was mounting. “We were on the phone, and I heard you scream. The line went dead. I raced over. Allie, honey are you sure you're all right?” she attempted to sit up, pain shot through her as she did. She looked at him through unfocused eyes. He sat next to her and gently took her hand. “Allie?” “What?” “Are you?” “Am I what?” “Are you hurt? Is the baby all right?” it took her a long time to respond. “We're fine, honey. Don't worry so much.” “I think you need to go to the hospital.” “I'm fine, my love. The baby's fine too.” “I'm worried about you. I think you may have a concussion.” “Can you tell me one thing?” “Sure, what is it?” “What happened?” Connor saw that the step they were sitting on had split in half. He surmised that Allison had attempted to climb the stairs while they were on the phone and slipped. He gently helped her up and they walked slowly towards the door. Connor grabbed her briefcase and purse. Allie nearly fell on the way to the car, but Connor caught her. On the drive to the hospital, Allie was quiet. Connor tried to keep her talking, but her responses were sluggish. Her speech was a little slurred and as he pulled into the hospital parking lot, he grew more worried. Allison was ushered up to the fourth floor where Margery Ryan was stationed. Connor was banished to the waiting room. Allison was dizzy and her answers to simple questions like her name and address were incorrect. Connor grew frantic as he paced in the waiting room. Margery headed to the small cubicle where Allison had been taken. She noted that Allison had a concussion previously, and this one could be worse. Margery entered quietly and observed Allison before she spoke. She pulled a chair beside Allison and spoke softly. “Allison, it's Margery. How are you? Are you still dizzy?” she looked at Margery thoughtfully and responded slowly. “A little, the whole room's spinning.” “I need to check you out. Is that okay?” “I'm scared, Margery. I'm worried about the baby!” she began to sob, Margery did her best to comfort her. “It's all right, Allison. That's why I want to do the exam, to make sure everything's all right.” Allison nodded, Margery could tell she still wasn't functioning normally. She began her exam slowly. Half an hour later, Margery appeared to give Connor an update. “How's Allie?” “Well, she has a grade 3 concussion. This is the most severe where the person loses consciousness.” “She was unconscious when I found her.” “I figured that. We're going to keep her overnight for observation. She should be able to go home tomorrow.” “That's good. How's the baby?” “The baby's fine, Connor. I have to warn you, that Allison is a little out of it.” “Is she still dizzy?” “No, that seems to have subsided. But her responses are slow.” “Can I see her?” “Sure.” Connor followed Margery to Allison's room. She was lying in bed looking quite confused. Margery discretely left the room. Connor pulled a chair beside Allison's bed. “Allie, how are you feeling?” “I'm ... better. Connor are you okay?” “I'm fine, why wouldn't I be?” her eyes looked glassy and he worried about her mental state. “What happened to me? How did I get here?” he explained it to her again, and she seemed pacified. “I think you should get some rest, Allie. I'll be back in the morning.” “What if the mystery caller comes here? What will I do? You're leaving me?” she began to sob and Connor gently stroked her hair. “Shh, Click here to read the rest of this story (558 more lines)
