A story about a serial killer with a twist | |||
Jimmy felt a sharp pain in his right hand and snapped awake quickly. He was back in his cell again. He had eaten all of his bread and had started nibbling on his fingers but the first bite brought him out of his daze. Now he was back in the grey, back in the void. Jimmy screamed. He began to cry, something he rarely did. He hated himself for shedding tears now. Crying in here was like giving up and that was something he could not bring himself to do. He hated crying even more now than he did when he was a kid, crying now caused him to sleep. He had been trying to avoid sleep because of his dreams. The dreams he could not remember but knew they were horrendous. He would wake up from these dreams covered in sweat and shaking with fear. He tried to stay awake tonight. He tried to stop crying. He fell asleep while the tears dried on his cheeks. Jimmy is ten years old now. He is playing in a ravine by the railroad tracks where he found the kitten just two years before. He loved this spot, it was quiet and nobody ever came down here. He was able to play down here in peace. He was able to do other things down here that brought him peace too. He started coming down here a month after the incident with the kitten. He walked through the creek, climbed the trees, watched the trains go by, and plenty of other things that a ten year old could think of to do. But there was a spot down here that frightened him. The train tracks were on top of the ravine and there was a long dark tunnel that the creek ran through to get to the other side. He brought himself to the edge of the tunnel once but could not see the light from the other side. Either the tunnel turned or it was longer than he wanted to believe. He had heard stories while listening to the other kids that there was a dropoff at the center of the tunnel and the water ended up in an underground stream. He knew this couldn't be true because there was a creek on the other side of the tracks but the tunnel on that side was bigger and he could see the light from the other side. He didn't know what to believe so he just stayed away from it. A day after his ninth birthday Jimmy was down in the ravine and found a dead animal. It was struck by a train and had ended up in the creekbed. He stared at the animal for a long time trying to figure out what it was. He had never seen anything like this before down here. It was bigger than a raccoon but smaller than a dog. It had light brown fur that was matted with blood. It had a large nose area and a few sharp teeth. "It's a woodchuck." he said to nobody but himself and picked it up by its hind leg. He stared at the blood that had dried up around its snout. He stared at the sharp teeth that were showing through its closed mouth, a mouth that would never open again he thought. It was while he was staring at the woodchuck that he decided why he always wanted to come down here. Today he had found a rabbit, it wasn't quite dead yet but he knew it wouldn't be long. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out his pocket knife. He opened the blade with careless ease. He sat the rabbit down. It tried to run. It was quick but Jimmy was quicker. He shoe came down on top of the rabbit and held in firmly in place. He reach into his backpack and pulled out the mason jar he had brought with him. He opened the lid and set the jar down next to the rabbit. He grabbed ahold of the rabbit again and brought the knife quickly across the throat of the rabbit. The blood began to flow. He dropped his knife and picked up the mason jar. The blood drained slowly but he soon had a full jar. He tossed the rabbit away into the creek, it had served its purpose. He watched it as the creek slowly drifted the rabbit into the tunnel of darkness. He shivered as it disappeared into the hole. He held his prize up to the sun. It glowed in the sunlight. He loved the way it glistened in the light. He brought the jar down and drank it quickly, it has to be fresh is what he always thought. "I will not bleed to death." he said as he finished the last of the jar. He placed it back into his backpack. It would be washed as soon as he got home and placed back into his pack for the next time. Tweet
