Love On A Sunday Afternoon

By: cowgirl_11

Sam and Paula sit around the table reading the Sunday paper. They have
been married for seven years. They've grown comfortable with each other
over those years. Like most married couples do. Today is their
anniversary.

“What do you have planned for today?” Sam asks Paula without looking up
from his paper.

“I don't know. Do you have something planned that I should know about?”
Paula asks him in return.

“No, I was thinking about going fishing. With spring and all, the bass
are starting to spawn.” Sam says as he puts down his part of the paper.

“Whatever.” Paula says from behind the paper. If Sam could see her face
he might have thought differently. Paula is feeling like she is being
taking for granted. It's their anniversary and he has forgotten yet
again.

“What does that mean?” Sam asks her, getting a little hot under the
collar.

“Nothing.” Paula tells him. She puts down the paper and takes her dirty
coffee cup to the sink.

“What are you mad at?” Sam questions her mood. After so many years, he
was able to read her like a book.

“Not mad at all. Go fishing for all I care.” Paula tells him and walks
out of the room.

Paula should be used to this by now. But she thought this year would be
different. She left him little notes, around the house, to make him
think about today. But, then he does have a head harder than steel.

“It's not he hasn't forgotten our anniversary in the past. He doesn't
even remember when my birthday is. How was he supposed to remember the
day they were married?" Paula mumbles as she walks off. "It wasn't an
important day for him. He didn't spend hours getting dressed and spent
so much money to look beautiful. No, the only thing he had to do was
show up at the church in a suit." She says as she walks to the living
room.

“What did you say?” Sam says from the kitchen.

“Nothing. At least nothing that concerns you, you rotten son of a, well
you know what you are.” Paula screams back at him as she reaches the
living room. On the coffee table is his gift. She doesn't want to even
give it to him now. But, she put so much into finding the right one.

“What the hell did I do?” Sam asks her as he walks into the living room.

“Nothing! That's the whole point. You did nothing.” Paula screams some
more. She picks up the gift and holds it behind her back as she turns
to look at him.

“What was I suppose to do then?” Sam asks her with an innocent look on
his face.

“Do you even know what today is, you jerk?” Paula looks him in the face.

“Yes, it's April 19, 2004.” Sam answers smartly.

“Do you know what today means?” Paula shouts at him.

“Honey, you don't have to yell. I'm in the same room.” Sam tells her
with a smile.
