Click here to read the first 75 lines of the story “Well, do you?” Paula doesn't quiet down one bit. In fact, that just made her get louder. “Well, let me think about it.” Sam smiles at her. He ponders it for just a minute. “I don't know. What is today?” “Today is the day I made the biggest mistake of my life.” Paula hollers at him and throws the gift at his head. It was too bad he had such quick reflexes. “What's this? It's not my birthday!” Sam says as ducks to catch the gift. "How is that your biggest mistake? You didn't have anything to do with it." He teases her. “No, you dumb butt! It's not your birthday. It happens to be our anniversary. Not that it's important to you.” Paula says on the verge of tears. “Honey, go to the bedroom and clean your eyes. I think something is in them.” Sam tells her as he opens his present. It's the fishing rod that he has been wanting. It is a lovely gift. Especially since she doesn't know the first thing about rods and reels. It just shows him how much attention she pays him. “Oh! I'm going to the bedroom alright. I hate you so much at times!” Paula screams as she stomps off. “So, help me God, if you follow me you will regret it. I will box your ears right off your head.” She says as she walks to the bedroom door. “I won't come near you unless you call me.” Sam says as he starts to take the fishing rod out of the package. He wishes he could use it today. But, he knew that wasn't going to fly. He isn't even going to bring it up. He puts the rod down beside the chair and glazes at it with longing. He walks away with a deep sigh. Some things are just more important then fishing. Paula throws open the bedroom door and is shocked at what she finds. There is a trail of rose petals leading to the bed. Pink rose petals no less, her favorite. He could remember her favorite flower. But, the dunce couldn't remember her birthday. Paula walks on the petals, feeling them soft and smooth under her feet. She walks over to the bed to see a gift box on it. It has the name of her favorite bath and body store on it. She slowly lifts the lid to see what is inside. What she finds really blows her away. The box is filled with bath oils and body lotions. But, the thing that really takes the cake is what is underneath all that. “How did you ever...” Paula begins with tears in her eyes. “Know what you wanted for our anniversary?” Sam asks as he comes up behind her. “I didn't tell you about this.” Paula moves all the stuff over to get at her present. She takes out the cashmere bathrobe she had been admiring for a month. “No, you didn't have too. I've saw your face the last time we walked by the store.” Sam says as he puts his arms around her waist. “I'm so glad you don't come in the garage. I've had this for a month out there.” “I'm so sorry!” Paula says as she turns around to cry into his chest. “For what? Thinking I would forget again? It's no big deal, you just know how I am. This time it was too important to forget.” Sam says to her. “I wanted to make it special for you. I want you to know how much I really do love you.” Sam says as he kisses the top of her hand. “I love you too, honey.” Paula cries out to him and hugs him to her. The robe falls to the floor, forgotten for the moment. “Now, how about we use some of this stuff? I can run us a hot bath and we could soak away the afternoon.” Sam says as he lifts her face out of his chest. “I got a better idea. How about a lazy Sunday afternoon of loving?” Paula smiles up at the most important person in her life. “You're on. I'll race you under the covers.” Sam teases her. Paula looks at her husband as he starts to take off his torn and battered pajamas. He may not remember everything that is important to her. But, he does remember that she loves him. And that makes up for all the lost anniversary presents. Loving and being loved in return is the most important thing in a marriage. When you have that, everything else is nonsense. Tweet
