Karla is excited over having Joey as her date for the Welcoming Ball but when she and another first year, Shasta, find it is just a joke, the desire for revenge is too much to ignore.

Karla joked and laughed with the girls, comfortable among her people.
Somewhere along the lines, the conversation turned to the welcoming
dance.

“I'm going with Nicolas Hailus,” Celeste sighed and everyone laughed.
Celeste was of the warriors and Nicolas was of the knights, it was as
if they belonged together.

Tiarra smiled and announced, “Oh yeah, I'm gong with Brandon Dewey.” A
series of disgusted cries followed her announcement and her face turned
red with anger, “He's two years younger, it's not that big of a deal.”

“Well, I'm going with Steve H2O,” Jocie decisively said

“What a supprize!” Gloria threw her fire pillow at Jocie and she
laughed. Jocie and Steve were together and had been for four years.
It was rumored that Steve was attempting to convince his parents to
allow him to marry her for she was a commoner and he was a prince.

“Well, I'm going with Joey Flowering,” Karla threw out and immediately
all eyes were upon her.

“Oh no,” Isabella put her hand up to her lips, aghast with shock. Karla
felt small and embarrassed, suddenly and unexpectedly becoming the
total focus of the place.

“Joey Flowering? As in the Flowering family of the plant people?” Dana
asked and Karla nodded her head.

“Oh no,” Isabella muttered again.

“Oh shutup, that doesn't help her any,” Jocie commanded and Karla's face
completely fell.

“Help me from what?” she wanted to know.

“I was supposed to go there last year with Joey,” Melissa mumbled, “I
arrived there, excited and hopeful only to find Joey hanging with a big
group of friends and a girl hanging on his arm. When I confronted him,
he blew me off and explained to his girlfriend, Arlene, that it was
common for silly first years to think they deserved a date for the
dance much less an older date.”

“But Joey wouldn't do that, I mean, he seemed to nice,” Karla insisted.

“It's a lie hon, his older brother, Charles, taught him that,” Gloria
explained, “He did it to me when I was a first year though Charles was
a fifth year then.”

“Yep, Charles did it to me too,” Antoinette looked embarrassed.

“Him and his friends ask all the first years and most often more than
one to go with them, and then they humiliate and harass the poor victim
about believing it.” Elaine explained.

“That's not cool,” Shasta whispered.

“Well, duh, but why?” Isabella wanted to know.

“Cause Jesse Cactus asked me to the welcoming dance” Shasta mumbled and
looked as if she were about to collapse into tears.

“Yeah, my guess is he is pulling your chain too,” Gloria threw out.
Karla and Shasta looked at each other and Shasta swallowed a lump that
was guaranteed to be tears.

“Sorry,” Isabella muttered and for a moment, no one spoke. Karla felt
sick to her stomach and wondered how could she ever go to the welcoming
dance now? She was dateless and devastated and she couldn't even tell
Joyce about it.

“Well, I got Spells to Deceive the Wicked this semester, maybe I could
find something to teach those two a lesson,” Gloria offered and there
were snickers around the room to her response.
