Karla is excited over having Joey as her date for the Welcoming Ball but when she and another first year, Shasta, find it is just a joke, the desire for revenge is too much to ignore.

“We could turn them into toads,” Elaine piped up.

“Give cow ears and turtle shells,” Celeste threw out.

“Make them smell like the boys bathroom till the end of time!”

“Make big ugly warts pop up all over them, and I do mean all over!”

“Turn their laughs into donkey calls.”

“Make their hair turn gray and full of dandruff!”

“No, we could not let them know that we know,” Karla announced, a plan
beginning to unfold, “We could be the ones to reject them, humiliate
them, and show them who we are all about.” There were cheers and
giggles about the room. Shasta nodded her head vigorously in agreement
and raised her thumbs up to the idea. The room was full of giddy
laughter and feminine chatter until the dinner bell rang.

They came out of their stairwell at the same time as the boys and Steve
immediately wrapped his muscular arms around Jocie. The rest of the
group began pushing and shoving in jest and Karla was just as feisty as
any of them, forgetting that she had been deceived.

As they were walking past the plant people section, she noticed Joey
sitting next to a super skinny, lime green haired girl whom she took to
be his girlfriend. He was smiling and chatting away with his friends,
unaware that he had been spotted.

She leaned over the table and innocently asked, “Are you still up for
the dance, Joey?” He looked up shocked at her and the girl beside him
didn't even bat an eyelash.

“Why of course, um,” he looked as if he were searching his memory so she
decided to help him.

“It's Karla, I can hardly wait,” she winked at him and continued walking
with her friends. She sat down and saw Joyce sit next to a shy looking
fire girl and a skinny fire boy. She also happened to notice a much
older young woman staring down Joyce but not saying a word. She
wondered what had happened but she didn't know when she would have the
chance to find out.

As the last of the straggling groups seated themselves, Miss Linoge
stood up and silence pressed down upon the Tokatekan habitants, “As we
all know classes shall begin tomorrow. You may open your books tonight
to find out what times and if you have tomorrow, but do realize you can
look no further than the schedule. You do have free time to wander the
halls and discover what you may, also the grounds are free but remember
you cannot leave unless a Tokatekan knows. Secondly, I've already
heard the buzz going around about the Welcoming Dance. Well, as you
know the oldest of each house is helping so please do not bother
pressuring them to find out what is occurring that night. It will be
in a week to help you settle in and find dates but don't worry, being
single, such as myself, is perfectly acceptable. It will also be free
dance wear so don't bother trying to match the dance's theme for there
is none to be revealed, at the time. Now you may enjoy your supper.”
She sat down and the food was gone even quicker than lunch for everyone
was eager to discover what classes they had tomorrow and with who and
so on. When the groups got up to go back to their rooms, Karla
bounced over to Shasta.

“Did you say anything to Jesse?” she inquired and she shook her head no,
“Well, quickly go say something so he doesn't forget that he pulled it
on you.” Shasta nodded her head and strode over to Jesse, his spiked
green hair glowing softly with the light that poured from the
glittering gems in the ceiling.

“Hi Jesse, I just want to check about the dance,” she smiled, seeming so
naïve and sweet. Karla noticed Jesse wince at her words and then force
a smile.

“Why were you worried that I would forget? I wouldn't ever forget such
a delicate personality such as yours, Shasta,” he rubbed her cheek
affectionately, and for a moment Karla was confused. Was he possibly
genuine? The moment Shasta turned around he began winking at his
friends and turning his thumb up then nose-diving towards the ground.

“Are we sure that it's just a joke?” Shasta had to know and Karla nodded
her head. Shasta snuck a glance back and caught the gestures Jesse was
making. Her shoulders fell and she began walking to the fire tower.
Karla hurried after her, feeling her own heart ache with the
embarrassment and rejection she had been dished. Ahead of her, Jocie
and Steve walked hand in hand, not saying a word but communicating a
thousand thoughts. She wished she could find a perfect guy like
that...in a week's time. When she got into the room, all of the girls
were eagerly pouring through their schedules. She opened her medicine
cabinet and looked into it's empty shelves.

“Please send my all of my school books,” she commanded and there they
were stacked one upon the other. She pulled out Self Defense in Magic
and opened it to the second page. It read “Learn to Fight Back 1-7
