Format Your Brain

Subba Rao

“You like rap music?” Dan looked at Juggernaut listening to Rap.

“I do.”

“I don't get it.”

“Rap music was evolved in Jamaica in early 70's' as DJ music

and American singers introduced it here as Rap music and

internationalized it.”

“I listen to pop and R&B music a lot but never able to

appreciate Rap music the way you seem to enjoy listening to Rap,” Dan

seems puzzled.

“I have been listening to DJ music since early 70's and I

developed liking towards it, it takes time to develop interest or

liking towards music foreign to us.” “Don't you love Indian music?”

“Of course, I love all kind of Indian music; classical, film,

devotional, instrumental or whatever; Indian music makes me feel at

ease and no other music come close, I don't know why.”

“To feel at ease or enjoy a particular type of music or a

tune, your brain has to be formatted to accept that particular

tune,” “When you listen to a new tune or alien music for the very first

time, you don't enjoy as much as your favorite tunes because your brain

has not yet formatted to receive the new tune, as you listen to the

new tune repeatedly, the new tune begins to make a format in the

brain and you start enjoy listening to it thereafter.”

“You mean to say that my brain has not yet formatted to Rap

music?”

“Yes, since you mentioned that you don't enjoy listening to

Rap, tells me that your brain has yet to be formatted for Rap; if you

listen to Rap more often, slowly you will start enjoying Rap and you

may find some Rap songs more interesting than others and then you look

forward listening to your favorite Rap on the radio.”

“How you figured it out all this?”

“Well, when I first came to Trinidad in early 70's, at first I

did not like the local Calypso music the way I love Indian music but as

I continued to listen Calypso, I started liking it and enjoying it

immensely; I could distinguish bad from good Calypso and so forth,

similarly when I moved to Jamaica, it took some time to appreciate

Reggae music and became a fan of Bob Marley and other Reggae artists
