A Speck of Greatness (standard:Flash, 247 words)
Author: kathygAdded: Feb 25 2012Views/Reads: 3497/0Story vote: 0.00 (0 votes)
A speck of "greatness" in a world shouting for attention. It feels like a line that never ends waiting for your turn.

A speck of greatness, like a shooting star, is a chance in a million.
Like the lottery. The "prize" shining in the distant horizon, dim to
your eyes but big in your heart's desire. The crowd, like dumb sheep,
follow the light, with the "promise" of money, maybe. Almost like a
sport, a game, a bargain, the crowd whispers to the skies above wanting
to win the prize.

A speck of greatness, like an forsaken goal, bright in the day of
tomorrows, never today. It shames the face of today and makes us
forget our blessings, however humble and makes us feel shameful of what
we do have. What is so great about tomorrow if we have to forsake
today to get there?

A speck of greatness, like the forbidden fruit, makes people shove and
grovel and be unkind to others just so they can feel successful. What
is success, truly? Can it be encapsulated in a lottery ticket or a
published work or are we really what we feel about ourselves?

At the end of the day, we have only ourselves to ponder, our conscious
is our only guide and our souls lay bare before tomorrow for the sins
we commit today.

A speck of greatness is already inside us. It is up to us to water and
nuture and give life to it. For if we cannot love ourselves and our
own "speck of greatness", how can we expect any one else to love us?
