Three Million Gods

Subba Rao

“Come again, 3 million Gods in your religion?”

“May be more.”

“What?”

“Yeah.”

“I don't get it.”

“You will never get it.”

“Why?”

“Your mind is set.”

“OK, ok, please explain.”

“My explanation would do no good; at the end you go back to

your own mind set.”

“At least let me hear your reasoning.”

“OK, listen good; some Hindus believe that God is within each

person; God is not external, either as person, voice, spirit or soul or

in any other form; one has to dig deep inside their own soul or as we

call athma; by constant internal search by asking ourselves “Whom Am I”

that leads to life of less indulgence and slow destruction of personal

ego.” “This belief and approach to self realization or reaching God

within would only work for few; but for the masses, this approach is

too abstract and generic; so in the process of finding a practical

means of application of this faith it became a necessity to personalize

God for daily devotion or Bhakti.” “The idea of giving a name to God or

personalizing God came into existence thousands of years ago in a

section of Hindu faith to solve the problem of sustaining faith and

bring the believers into places of worship for devotion.” “A male or

female name was assigned to represent God; thus through marriages,

births and incarnations among Gods, millions of Gods were evolved to

satisfy individual need of every believer of Hindu faith to pray

his/her own personal God. It is like a street name, whether a street

has a name or not it would eventually lead to the destination;

similarly, faith in God with any one of three million different names

or no name at all leads to self realization or God within.” “There are

Gods with specific duty to fulfill his or her devotees desires; for

example Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, Goddess Saraswathi for knowledge,

Goddess Kali for over-all protection, Lord Rama for patience, Lord

Ganesh for confidence, Lord Hanuman for courage, so on and so
