A poem about my first-born child.

SON OF MY HEART

For Tom

First-born son of my heart
son of my life
never was a child awaited
with more anticipation and
received with such love

Do you remember how I sang
Tombo, Tombo
Where You Gonna Go-we-o
and all those other silly childhood songs

I yearn to hold that little baby
just once more
to touch him with my love

Pliable, happy, easily directed
you were such a good baby I knew
I wanted to have a dozen more like you
years later I realized it was less my expertise
and more your inherent nature that made you
such a delightful, good-natured baby

I'll never forget the time you were bitten
by a child during social hour after church
I think it hurt me and grandpa much more
than it hurt you

I yearn to hold that little baby
just once more
to touch him with my love

As your brother and sisters came along
your dad and I expected too much
we took advantage of your innate sense
of responsibility and goodness
we expected you to be our little man
setting standards much too demanding
always though, you tried to comply
I yearn to hold that little boy
just once more
to touch him with my love

Moving to Tennessee
taking you from your friends
at First Baptist Church
uprooted you all much more
than we realized at the time
yet I know we hoped
it would be a new beginning
for all of us

First-born son of my heart
son of my life
I yearn for another chance

A chance to be more patient
more understanding
more appreciative
of the kind, gentle little boy who
too quickly grew into a man

A man of integrity and honor
fulfilling the promise and potential
of the delightful child of long ago

I yearn to hug that man
once more
to touch him with my love

For now I write these simple words
and hope that my feelings
which are constant and forever
will rise up off the page
and touch him with my love
