Doubles Man Cometh Subba Rao Here comes the Doubles man, Its lunch time already? Two Doubles please. Hot pepper? Little bit. Weak stomach? Yeah man. He is going nowhere; He is addicted to Doubles. Doubles? It is a lunch snack in Trinidad. An East Indian culinary byproduct, made from two pieces of deep fried small circular flat bread ‘Bara' colored yellow with turmeric slapped with Channa or Chickpeas curry in between with a pat of Scotch Bonnet pepper sauce. A complete meal. Wait a minute I figured it out its origin. Yeah? Bara is a miniature Puri What? Deep fried circular flat bread called Puri was invented in India, A quintessential snack eaten with curry for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In Trinidad it is made like a small sandwich To hold it with two fingers to shove it into mouth. Two miniature yellow Puris with curry became Doubles in Trinidad. You stole our invention shouted Juggernaut with mouthful of Doubles. Boy, give us a break nah, Doubles is our own culinary invention in Trinidad, lamented the Doubles Man. The Doubles man built a two-story house In Arima, Sent his two sons to college, Married off his daughter with a big dowry, With money earned from selling Doubles on the University Campus.
