It was either do or die. Being a disappointment to my friends was not an option. At school, the name Anthony Wilson meant something. Others noticed me. Bullies steered clear. Life seemed enjoyable again, and I wasn’t going back to loneliness. | |||
Prologue “Are you serious?” Luis bellowed, rearranging the dark frames on his freckled face. Filled with shame, I nodded. “Dude, we came all the way from Hazelcrest. Do you have any idea how far that is from here?!” he continued. I began to reply, but only smoke appeared, fading into the frosty evening air. Instead, Leavitt rose to my defense, tossing blonde hair from her eyes. “Calm down. If his dad said he can't go, there's nothing you or I can do.” “Bull,” Luis spat. “My mom says no all the time and I still sneak out. Grow some balls, man!” “Everyone isn't an idiot like you.” She countered, agitated. “Whatever.” He said, collapsing onto the porch swing. Even two hoodies was no match for an icy gust that seeped through to my pajamas. With only three hours until Dad's shift ended, it was either do or die. Life seemed enjoyable again, and I wasn't going back to loneliness. “Ok, I sighed. “I'm going.” “Thank you!” Luis shouted, jumping up. Leavitt frowned. “Are you sure? We don't want you to get in trouble.” I shook my head. She didn't know I was already in trouble for having them stand on the porch. “What he doesn't know won't hurt him. I'll meet you guys out front in a minute.” Tweet
