She was alone on the balcony when he found her. The woman was really an introvert, he thought. He always caught her alone and thinking but she never did tell him what bothers her no matter how much he insisted. He knew she wouldn't last an hour with the guests, which was mostly composed of his grandfather's family friends. He stood a couple of footsteps behind her. Her right foot was tapping the floor lightly but it seems as though it can't keep up with the music downstairs. From where she was, he knew she could hear snippets of chats but then she wasn't the type to eavesdrop, although she finds it hard inserting herself in a conversation. This was just like years ago, when he celebrated his twelfth birthday and everyone was invited. Most of the girls wanted to talk to him and they enjoyed either his company or the party treats. She didn't. Just as she was before, she hated crowds. Only then, she was sitting on their house's front steps and it wasn't so difficult to talk to her. Now, he felt like every time she talked to him, he could see disgust in her eyes. No one could blame her, though. Not even him. She sighed deeply. She knew she would be reprimanded for leaving the party early but she was more afraid of being in a crowd full of strangers than any kind of punishment right now. When she bit her thumbnail, he knew something was wrong. “What seems to be the problem now?” he asked; his voice cutting through the silence. She flinched a bit in surprise but she didn't even look at him. “What makes you think there's a problem?” she asked with mocking nonchalance. “You. Hiding here when everyone's enjoying the party out there.” “I am enjoying the party.” Big time. “And by the way, I'm not hiding.” Liar. “Just what the hell are you doing here, anyway? Counting the stars? Or do you want to play hide and seek with me?” “Well, yes, you could say I'm counting the stars.” “You were?” “I was. Until you came.” “And how many have you counted so far?” “I lost count.” “You did.” “Yes. Now, if you would just attend to your guests and leave me be, I might just be able to continue counting them.” “I want to count them with you.” Her smile faded. The moment he saw her face, he regretted saying the words. She seemed to be all jittery all over again. He heard her feign a cough. Then, a long stretch of awkward silence. Say something, she urged herself. He was definitely making fun of you. You shouldn't take it too seriously. He's definitely laughing inside right now. Are you just going to let him make fun of you? Just when she was about to open her mouth to saying something, he said crossly, “Damn it, I had been looking for you when you know I should have been---” She faced him. Her face was serious as hell. Should have been what, she wanted to ask. Should've been taking pleasure from all the clingy high society women around him? “And you just wave me away like some dumb kid. You know, you should be grateful I came here for you.” Click here to read the rest of this story (69 more lines)
