I had to write a story for English class using flashback and foreshadowing, and this was the result. I realize that it's short, and pretty dry, but there was a page limit. message me on improvements | |||
~~FLASHBACK~~ How could she? What on Earth even gives her the right to leave him? Edgar Freemantle drove his Mustang down the mountain from the mountain that he and Shirley, his wife, had been staying at. It was their 20th anniversary and he took them up there for a surprise, and what does she do? Leaves him. That's what she does. He accelerated to 30, he loved the feeling of speed, not the drug. He felt the car rumble over rocks as he came up to a turn. The Mustang handled well, which was a good thing, because there was a huge cliff jutting up on his right, and nothing for what seemed like miles on his left. The rain was starting to worsen, and he could barley see out his windshield without the wipers working overtime. "I think we've come as far as we're going to come in our relationship, Eddie," She had said. "I think it'd be good, good for us both, if we see. . . other people," She had said. So Edgar took the two six packs left that seemed to follow him everywhere, and their only car, and headed to Denver from their cabin up on the near top of the mountain that was 20 miles from Denver. "I gave her everything she could want" He told the empty passenger seat, empty except for the two six packs, which had now been reduced to one. He had a sharp buzz going on, but he felt good. Felt in power, which was better then all the cocaine his money could buy, which was a lot. Edgar was six foot two, with 30 pounds of excess fat around his middle. He was 47 years old, and owned one of the most respectable stocks in his town, which was Boulder. He was worth six million in stocks, and had another $400,000 in solid cash stowed in the bank. Eddie didn't have much to worry about, as far as money. Shirley still worked, though; he thought it was just a pride thing, but always told her to quit, that they didn't need the extra money. She used to shrug, with a smile, and head out to work to draw in her small amount of earnings. She was a waitress at Crossroads, a small country-style restaurant. He was brought out of his thoughts when he almost drifted off the left side of the road. Normally, he'd pull over until morning, because he was so tired, not to mention drunk. But the seven cans of beer numbed his surprise, and instead, he found it funny. "Dang!" He said, laughing, he opened the eighth can of beer, not knowing it would be the last one he'd ever open. He was about halfway down when he saw two pools of white, almost blue, lights. It took him a minute to realize that they were headlights. They had their brights on, and he couldn't see anything in the gloom of night. "For God's sake! Turn of yo' lights!" He shouted at the other driver to no avail. He felt the left side of the car give out as it crossed the crest of the cliff, no guard rails, lucky Edgar. He might of been able to recover, or at least stop the car from plunging over the side, if he wasn't so intoxicated. He realized what was happening a second to late, and attempted to recover two seconds too late. The car dropped ten feet before it hit the slope; it started sliding down the muddy cliff until he hit a tree trunk with his front left tire, which made the car go into a barrel roll another twenty feet, smashing all the windows, before it came to another tree trunk, it was upright now, which ripped off the driver side's door, somehow not hurting Edgar in any way. The car slowed down, and Edgar honestly thought it was all over, and he would be able to get out, unharmed. It rolled onto its roof, which didn't cave in because of the roll cage he had installed after he wrecked his last car, and slid ten more feet where it became wedged in between two pine trees. He looked around, confused. Safety glass was on him, and he was upside down, he could figure that much out. A white light, he remembered that, too. Suddenly, he realized he fell off the side of the road, and about that time, the pain came. He screamed horribly. He could feel that both his legs were practically pulverised, his head felt like someone with anger issues let out their anger with a sledgehammer on it. His left eye was swollen shut and Click here to read the rest of this story (252 more lines)
