Ashes (standard:poetry, 119 words)

it starts with ashes, and it ends with ashes.

The ashes spread from the fire

as you open the fireplace door

They lift up like an explosion

and twist into the air

Landing softly onto your black and white dress

You open your dark eyes;

they are illuminated by your pale skin

A flicker reflects in your black eyes

It dances in a bright orange glow-

so blinding, startling in this black and white world

The fire dances, whispering its joyful song

You close your eyes again

feeling the heat warm your icy skin

At last you'll be freed from your frozen world

The fire spits out from the fireplace

sparking around you

It licks at your white skin, blackening it

until all that is left is ashes
