A poem about boyfriends | |||
1. The theater was dark and cold. Then again, they always are. My throat is tight, palms sweaty, To this day I will tell you I have no clue what movie we were watching. Kelly told me that you have to anticipate the moment, right when he leans in, you do too. But she was experienced. Maybe that’s why when it happened, I wanted it to be over as soon as possible. I was only 13 but even I knew that a first kiss wasn’t supposed to be like that. Saliva everywhere, not able to breathe, and the taste of that Quarter Pounder (with extra onions) he had eaten before his parents dropped us off. 2. I lie in my bed, thinking back to the love. But that wasn’t love. The sandy blonde head attached to the warm body, clad in Scooby Doo boxers and a wife beater. (I still laugh when I hear that term.) His arms around me, close as he can get without climbing inside my skin. He wakes for a moment, and I turn my head to meet his lips. “I love you.” he whispers, before sleep takes him back. I run my fingers through his hair, whispering “I love you too Brian.” 3. Not like Mike. Mike was not love. I thought he was. I sat bored inside Jim’s Dairy Mart, not a great name for an ice cream joint, but it was fun work and it paid well, for a fifteen year old anyway. I remember the first time I saw him. I didn’t think hair could be that shade of orange. He ordered a banana split, I forgot the bananas. While I fixed it, he scribbled on a scrap of paper.
