Will Leo discover the identity of Dumpster Girl and will this lead to a shocking connection to his wife's death? | |||
The next day Leo arrived into headquarters to find a note on his desk from his boss saying "See me immediately!!!" Leo groaned, three exclamation marks meant she was really ticked off about something. Linda had taken over as department chief six months ago and she was really cracking some nuts around the place. He walked to her office and knocked on the open door. Linda swung around in her chair, she was on the phone, he couldn't help but notice her long tan legs, muscled from tennis and hiking. As he waited he heard the faint sounds of the orchestra practising in the opera house across from the building. He listened carefully, head cocked to one side like a springer spaniel and nodded in satisfaction. Puccini's La Boheme if he wasn't misaken. Dammit, Puccini reminded him of Susan and that wonderful night they had spent at the Metropolitan in New York. Susan had been uncultured when they first met but he patiently introduced her to the world of arts and music and before long she knew her Beethoven from her Bach. Linda signalled to him to come back later and he went down to the changing rooms, a place he never relished, too many towel whippings had made him wary of the cynical brutes he had to work with. Today there were three of them, sniggering over a smutty magazine and they looked up when he opened his locker. One of them nudged the others and asked 'How's your wife Leo, oh I forgot, she's dead" before laughing with his primitive friends. Leo shook his head and despaired. You were more likely to find a Hegel than a Hefner in his locker. Just as he was about to snap a retort, he heard the breathless voice of Stu, his new partner. Stu was a fresh faced rookie, desperate to impress but had the makings of a good cop. "Leo, wait til you hear this" Stu said, brandishing a piece of paper "That girl we found in the dumpster, well she's not your usual crack head junkie, she's the daugher of Big Benny!" Leo frowned, Big Benny was the owner of numerous casinos and nightclubs in Vegas. He was straight as a bench and didn't tolerate fools. He had come to Susan's funeral and had complimented Leo on his saxophone playing, saying it was very moving. This didn't make sense, Leo slammed his locker door shut and said "Come on Stu, we've got to make a house call" Tweet
