The horsepowers that serve our needs are now breathing all our air. What to do! What to do! I know, and so do you. Read on. | |||
Lost Air The issue is oxygen. A horse breathes about 5 times as much air as a person. An 80-horsepower auto breathes as much air as 400 people. About 35,000,000 autos, trucks and special vehicles are made each year. Over 500,000,000 vehicles are in operation. They breathe as much air as 200,000,000,000 people. But there are only 6,300,000,000 people on the Earth. Since most of the oxygen breathed in by people, horses and cars is converted to carbon dioxide, the planet is losing oxygen faster than trees can replace it. In the year 2010, it will cost about $1,000 per vehicle to plant enough trees to compensate for the lost air. In the year 2020, it may be $5,000. If you can afford to own a vehicle, you can afford to pay for its fuel, air and maintenance. If you serve people with your vehicle, you can share this cost with them. The issue is oxygen. Not resources. Not pollution. Not transit programs. OXYGEN. TO BREATHE. Stop driving. Ride a bike. Plant trees. Seattle, September 23, 1999 Gerald X. Diamond Tweet
