Part 2 of On Holy Ground: The groups are chosen, what will happen? | |||
The following day, Shea and Conor walked to school together, filled with foreboding about the list. “Think he grouped us together?” Conor asked solemnly. “I doubt it,” Shea returned pessimistically. Conor sighed heavily as they climbed up the steps to the high school. They still had about ten minutes before the first bell to check the list and go to the cafeteria for coffee. First, they went to their lockers and got their books for first period, then stood together in the practically empty hallway. “So, should we go check it?” Conor finally broke the silence. Shea moaned dramatically. “I suppose,” she assented. She and Conor went off to their film class like two people about to be executed. When they reached the door, they saw that the rest of their classmates were crowded in front of the bulletin board, craning to look. Some had already found out their groups and were standing looking pleased or angry. “Hey! Could anyone who already knows who their group members are please move out of the way?” Conor yelled above the din. Everyone looked over and slowly moved away from the bulletin board. Shea smiled satisfactorily. That was the cool thing about Conor-when he talked, people listened. Conor quickly strode over to the bulletin board and scanned down the list with his index finger. Shea was too afraid to look, so she waited just behind her friend’s back. “Yes!” the utterance of exhilaration snapped Shea back to attention. “What?” Shea asked excitedly. “We’re together!” Conor told her, his grin illuminating his whole visage. Shea’s grin soon joined him, and an incredulous but happy look took over her eyes. “Awesome!” she cried. “I knew Mr. Peterson wouldn’t let us down! Are we with Amber and Garrett?” she asked optimistically. “I’m so dumb...I didn’t even check!” Conor said. His finger quickly scanned back down to Group #3. “Conor...Shea...” Shea joined him, peering at the list. “...Chrissy, awesome! She’s a great camera woman!” she exclaimed happily. “Yeah but look.” Conor said, his tone changing suddenly from happiness to desolation. “What?” Shea asked warily. Conor pointed. “Melissa and Jack?” Shea cried in outrage. Conor nodded gravely. “Oh, my God! No! I won’t do it!” Shea cried hysterically. “Would you shut up?” Conor hissed nervously, looking around at the curious faces that started to stare at the two. “Pipe down a little, would you?” “I will not work with Melissa Madison and Jack Thompson. No. N-O, no!” Shea screamed in a whisper. “We don’t have a choice, remember? It’s not debatable!” Conor reminded Click here to read the rest of this story (164 more lines)
