Statement.

I'm tired of looking

Into the eyes of the dead:

Friends, family.

The last one

Held my hand

As I was leaving.

The eyes resigned,

Wanting to say goodbye.

It's always the same.

There's no fear,

No wailing or regret,

Only resignation,

A tired look,

Not bothering to fight.

.

My mother rose

From a deep twilight

Just before she died.

The small patient hand

That had guided mine

Over tangled shoe laces

patted it one last time

Before she closed her eyes.

.

My dog lay quietly

On the stainless steel table

As the vet gave him

A lethal shot.

I whispered goodbye.

I'd always told him there

Was a doggie heaven

Without leashes and fences,

where we'd take long walks forever.

But I think he knew I'd lied,

For there was only

Resignation in those

Tired old eyes,

A final wag of tail

His goodbye.
