Chapter One "Something's Not Right"

Captains' Log, Stardate 1729.2. The Enterprise is returning to the
Romulan Neutral Zone after a lay over at Starbase 12. In an
unprecedented move, eight of our fellow class Starships have been
ordered there to join us. Fleet Admiral Komack is onboard and is using
the Enterprise as his flagship. Also onboard is T'Prell, a high-ranking
member of The Vulcan Science Academy whose specialty is ancient Vulcan
history, particularly, the era of upheaval that occurred when Surak
began his teachings in logic.

ENTERPRISE:

Captain James T. Kirk was sitting in his captain's chair, looking rather
bored. First officer and science officer Lt. Commander Spock was
standing by his science station, looking into his sensor viewer.
Lieutenant Nyota Uhura was seated at her communication station, running
diagnostic tests. Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu was manning the helm, and
humming a tune. At navigation sat a brand new officer, two months out
of the Academy. He'd joined the crew at Starbase 12 to replace
Specialist Tomlinson who was killed during the Romulan incursion six
weeks before. Having read the Ensign's file, Kirk knew that the young
officer had chosen command as his field which required a working
knowledge of all ships stations. Seeing a bit of himself in this
officer, he ordered him to the bridge for initiation and to see how the
Ensign handled himself.

“Mr. Chekov, what is our ETA to the rendezvous point?” asked Kirk,
knowing full well that was Sulu's department.

Pavel Chekov leaned over to Sulu's board and replied, “Three hours forty
seven minutes, Keptin.”

Kirk glanced over to Spock, who had looked up when the question was
directed the wrong way. Kirk gave him a wink. Spock frowned. He had no
idea what the wink was about. He turned back to his scanner when the
Bosun's whistle was heard over the Comm system, drawing everyone's
attention.

“Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, report to my quarters,” barked Admiral
Komack, in a deep booming voice.

Kirk sighed. “What now?” he said to himself. He turned to Spock, gave
him a nod and they headed to the turbo lift. “Sulu, you have the Con,”
he said, as the door whooshed shut.

“What do you think it is this time?” asked Kirk as he grabbed the
controller and ordered, “Deck 8.”

“I do not know. He may want to go over our testimony on the encounter
with the Romulan Warbird again,” replied Spock.

“Again? How many times do we have to keep going over this? I have a
feeling that Komack is onboard for more than a simple moral boost to
the other ships and the Star Fleet Corp of engineers building the new
outposts,” ventured Kirk.

“I would have to agree with your assessment, Captain. I have never heard
of assembling nine Starships in one area like this before. That leaves
only three left to guard the whole of the Federation,” said Spock.

“I've tried to persuade him to disclose his and T'Prell's mission, but
he won't budge. Something big is up and it's important enough to send
the Commander of Star Fleet Operations,” said Kirk. He regarded his
First Officer and noticed his bottom lip was drawn up. “It there
something bothering you, Spock?”

“I simply do not see the logic of repeatedly going over my testimony. It
will not change.”

Kirk looked hard at Spock, who was now shifting his weight on his feet
