way out of this. You should have left your pretty little girlfriend to
us and got away while you could. Now you get to stay here forever."

At his words, Mikel felt lightening pain arch through his back and
belly. He looked down and saw a huge portion of a very sharp knife
sticking out of his belly, his blood dripping off it's tip. Then his
mother yanked it back through and he fell to the ground, clutching at
his stomach wound.

"Mikel," Sharlene's voice caught him and he looked up to see her stand
up, the ropes sliding easily off her, "I'm sorry but what they offer is
so incredible, I had to help. Trust me, this way, we'll be together
forever." He was in too much pain to question her and even if he
could, he couldn't comprehend what was going on to begin to ask
questions.

His father went to a closet, pulled out a rusty looking chalice and a
bottle full of thick, syrupy reddish brown liquid. Tenderly, he
picked Mikel up and held him so that his blood trickled into the
chalice. When it was full, he took a sip then passed it to his wife,
who took a sip as well. The rest of Mikel's blood was dumped into the
near full bottle and he was dropped back to the ground.

"Sharlene, it is your turn," his mother called to his girlfriend who
strode obediently over.

"Oh Natalia, I have wanted this more than I can say. Will it hurt
much?" she begged to know, her eyes shining in an eerie light.

"More than you can ever imagine and then, no pain ever again," she
promised and Mikel whimpered as she drove the blade through Sharlene's
stomach. Even after her betrayal, he cried out for her pain and
reached a bloody hand toward her. She didn't move but stared at him
with her eyes glazed in shock then his father collected her blood.

"Now you can see what we have," Natalia chuckled and strode over a sheet
covered object that was taller than her. With one smooth yank, she
pulled it off and he stared in terror at the monstrosity beneath the
sheets.

"We have been promised immortality from generations beyond. Through
blood shed and sacrifices, we will live forever," his mother had the
sound of a fanatic and he realized, they were crazier than he had first
believed, "Oh Mikel, you have no idea the wonderful gift your life
force will bless us with. You have no idea and I thank you so much my
son."

His father strode over to her, "Darling, we still have one more kill to
make so do not get too excited."

"One more?" she asked then screamed as he stabbed her in much the same
way she had done to her own son. When his father pulled out the
bloodthirsty knife, she collapsed to the floor but it was obvious the
fight was not out of her.

As he went to collect her blood, she clawed at his arm and snarled, "You
bastard, you lying betraying bastard. May Satan help you should I find
you in another life." With that, she released her grip upon his arm
and allowed him to finish his collection. When he had completed his
ritual, he chanted some words in his native Russian tongue then poured
the bottle of blood upon the cruel alter of his god.

For a moment, Mikel saw figures in the blood then he was suddenly pulled
violently towards the horror they had uncovered. He glanced at his
mother in horror and saw her empty eyes then he looked back towards
Sharlene. Where they had been laying, their bodies were still there,
but their eyes held no soul. Suddenly he understood and screamed at he
was pulled completely into the darkness.

Twenty years later:

Jenny was in her bedroom, getting dressed for her big date. Shawn, one
of the coolest guys of the senior class, had asked her to go swimming
in the swimming hole on his father's land. Of course, she hadn't
turned him down but had leapt at the offer. She slid into the cute
white bikini with roses on it that her father would have had a heart
attack had he seen it. Then, checking her appearance to make sure that
she did look good in the swimsuit, she tossed on a cute blue summer
dress over the suit.

Excitedly she charged down the stairs where her momma was sitting at the
table, "Jenny, isn't Shawn too old for you?"

"Oh momma, he's only one grade over me," she gushed, trying to smooth
over the fact that he had failed twice.

"Jenny Lee Johnson, are you really gonna try to make me believe that
this boy is that close in age to you? We all know Shawn ain't nothin
but trouble and was held back twice," her momma finished sewing up
Will, her youngest brother's, pants.

"I know that too but this is my first real date, please let me go," she
begged just as Rooster came strolling in. Rooster was her older
brother, two years older, but he was in the same grade as Shawn. His
reason for being held back was he had a farming accident his sophomore
year that had been put him too far behind his studies to catch up.
Rooster was also known for being trouble and today was no different.

"Oh yes momma, send lil' Jen on her first date. We wouldn't want dear
ol' Shawn to be disappointed," he teased as he grabbed an apple out of
the fruit bowl.

"Shut up Rooster," she hissed and her mother added, "Rooster, go help
your father. I can handle this on my own."

At that moment, there was a honk from the front yard and she knew it was
Shawn. "Oh momma, please, please let me go out with him. I promise to
come home and work extra hard on my chores and get all my homework
done. Please," she begged, terrified that her date with handsome Shawn
was about to be cancelled.

Her momma looked tortured then sighed, "Ok Jenny, but don't you stay out
too late. I want you home by dark, you understand?"

"Yes momma, thank you momma," she threw her arms around her soft neck
and gave her a big kiss on her cheek. Then she flew out the front door
to the rusty Ford that rumbled in the driveway. The truck was so
filthy that it's original color could never be identified and Shawn was
constantly working on it, but he was one of the few in the neighborhood
that had his very own vehicle.

"I was about to get out," he grinned, his eyes flicking over her as she
pulled herself into the seat.

"My momma was just talking to me, that was all," she smiled and blinked
her baby blues at him.

"Sounds like too much fun for me," he threw the truck into first and
roared out of the driveway, leaving a cloud of dust behind them. His
truck's shocks were in bad need of repair and she found herself
practically thrown into his lap.

Nervously, she giggled and he smiled broadly, "Well now Miss Johnson,
didn't know you wanted to be that close to me. Mighty flattered." She
shook her head, embarrassed, but liked the way it felt to be cuddled
close to him even if she was being jostled the entire way.

They arrived at the swimming hole, which was a part of the creek that
had been damned up for that express purpose. There were large, old
trees and bush around the swimming hole that not only offered shade but
hid it from the prying eyes of passer bys.

They hopped out and Shawn slid his shirt off, her eyes were instantly
glued to his well cut body and when she did raise them to his, the
smile he wore made her look quickly back down. All of a sudden very
shy, she began to slowly pull off her sundress.

When it was off, she heard him gasp then say, "Wow Jenny, you look
beautiful in that there suit."

Blushing, she crossed her arms over her chest and replied, "Well thank
you Shawn." Suddenly he strolled over, scooped her up and tossed her
into the cold water. Sputtering, she popped her head above the surface
and cursed at him as he jumped in.

"You ain't mad at me, are you?" he asked as he swam over and carressed
her arm.

Giving a soft little smile, she replied, "No, I'm not. I couldn't ever
be mad at you." With one of his classic gorgeous smiles, he touched
her cheek and pulled her towards him for a kiss.

A branch cracked in the brush and she leapt back, "What was that?"

"I didn't hear nothin'," he coolly responded then pulled her back to
him. His dark blue eyes held her completely and she forgot about the
crack. Again, they leaned in for a kiss but this time, she definitely
heard footsteps.

"Shawn, that ain't nothin', there is someone out there," she blurted,
her eyes dancing across the shadows, trying to see deeper but unable
to.

"Jenny, quit being so damn nervous. It's just a goddamn kiss, nothin'
to be scared of," he pulled her once more to him but she didn't fall
for it again. She tried to pull away but he had an iron grip upon her
wrist, a painful grip.

Twisting her arm but unable to escape, she cried out, "Ouch, Shawn,
you're hurting me. Lemme go now!" Then a movement caught her eye and
she turned to see one of Shawn's friends, John, step out of the
undergrowth.

"Right on time," Shawn announced and released her but she just drifted,
her eyes wide in stunned disbelief. What was going on? Two more of
his friends stepped out and she felt cold terror in the pit of her
belly. Surely they'd just come for a swim, that was all.

"Shawn, what's going on?" she asked, trying to hide that her voice was
shaking.

"A little party, that's all," he laughed, his eyes glinting maliciously.
Suddenly, she swam for the side and desperately tried to pull herself
out. A strong arm yanked her up and she found herself face to face
with Chuck, another one of his friends.

"Hello pretty lil' girl," he grinned, revealing the missing teeth he'd
lost playing hocky.

She bit her lip and meekly said, "Hello."

Shawn pulled himself out of the water and strode towards her but froze,
"Do you guys here that?" There was the sound of someone driving across
the field with music blaring in warning.

"Who's not here?" someone asked and Shawn shook his head, they were all
there.

Whoever it was pulled up alongside the swimming hole and called from the
otherside of the trees, "Hey Jenny, hurry up. Your momma sent me,
there's been a family emergency." She pulled her arm away from Chuck,
grabbed her dress, and ran through the bush before someone could stop
her.

When she emerged, she saw a brand new suburban covered in a layer of
dust from the field. Billy Ray, the son of the mayor, sat in the front
seat. She didn't really know him, they'd never talked but at that
moment, she would have taken rescue from anyone. Not wasting a moment,
she threw open the door and climbed in. She looked back at the grove
and saw Shawn emerge, glaring defiantly at her.

"Oh thank you. Do you know what the family emergency is?" she breathed
out in relief, her heart pounding loudly in her ears.

"Ah, there really ain't no emergency. I just figured it was the best
way to get you out of there without making them all attack," he replied
and saw her staring at him in shock, "I overheard the boys talking
about what they were gonna do in the locker room. I didn't think it
was right so I had to stop them. I did stop them, right?"

"Yeah, yeah you did. Thank you again," she laughed and then they lasped
into silence.

Billy Ray was the first to break it, "Uh I know this is kinda awkward
and all, but I was wondering if you'd have a picnic with me."

For a moment, she thought about it, afraid of a repeat of Shawn and his
buddies then decided, "Sure, why not?" Shawn was completely forgotten
after his nasty little surprise. Now, her crush was completely on
Billy Ray, her savior.

"Good," he smiled and turned towards his property. He drove them
through several fields and into the hills. It was a quiet place,
secluded, and she again wondered if maybe he was just like Shawn. Then
he drove into a valley and parked, taking her breath away. The valley
was full of wildflowers of all sorts of brilliant hues, butterflies
flew about, gracefully kissing the bowing heads of the blosssoms.

"Oh my gawd," she gasped, "I've never seen anything so beautiful."

"You like it? Good," he hauled a large picnic basket then tossed a
blanket to her, "Can you carry that?" She nodded, still enthralled
with the beauty of the valley. They set up the picnic and ate, gazing
around them in quite awe of the scenery. Then they laid side by side
upon the blanket, the flowers towering over them, and stared at the
clouds drifting lazily across the sky.

It was perfect, better than Jenny could have ever imagined, then Billy
Ray asked, "Does Anna have a boyfriend?" Anna was her sister, born
between her and Rooster. Her mother had gotten pregnant about ten
months after Rooster then nine months after Anna, it had made them a
large and very close family.

"I dunno, why?" she tried to conceal the envy in her voice but the envy
clung to her like steel bands around her ribs, crushing her so that it
was difficult to breathe.

Billy Ray turned to her, his chocolate brown eyes glittering, "I was
wonderin' if you think she'd ever go out with me? I'd ask her myself
but I'm afraid she might say no."

"Uh," she turned her head so he couldn't see the tears in her eyes, "I
dunno, she's never mentioned you before. I think it's getting late, my
momma wanted me home soon."

"Oh yeah, well let's get goin' then," he faked happiness but she could
hear the disappointment in his voice. She was sure that he had hoped
Anna talked about him all the time, that she was crushing on him as
much as her younger sister was. Even though she knew it wasn't right,
she felt a deep satisfaction at his disappointment as he had hurt her
too.
