Remembering one of Winter's most delightful pleasures. | |||
Snow used to be clean. Back in the days when pollution wasn't so global and we'd never even dreamed - in our most horrible nightmares - of acid rain! Snow was as pure as, well, the "driven snow." As I sit here listening to Christmas music I'm remembering some of my "favorite things," one of which was Snow Ice Cream. Here's the recipe; a gift to a generation who will never be able to enjoy it: Go out to the backyard after a snowfall. Find the biggest, fluffiest snowbank that has been untouched by man and beast, and fill a big kitchen bowl with the magical ingredient. Return to the warmth of the kitchen where your youngest family members await. Sit the bowl in the center of the table and gather the other ingredients: sugar, vanilla and milk. Add the ingredients "to taste" - stir and serve. I'm sure my memory of the taste of snow ice cream is much more delicious than the actual concoction. It was a treat; but more than that, it was a ritual, a way to become "One" with the season. It was a rite of passage into winter. The end Tweet
