it. “This is not the right time for me to have this baby.” I said. He
looked up at me with a smug look on his face.

“You should have thought of that before you slept with my brother.”

“It's not like we planned this!” I yelled, getting rather angry at him.
“It's not like I said, hey Mark, while we're at it, let's get pregnant!
It'll piss our parents and Evan off, and it'll be a joyous occasion for
all of us.” I picked up my purse from next to the couch and stormed out
of the room.

“Lou, wait!” He tore up the stairs behind me, catching my arm as I
reached my car. “Come on, we can talk about this. School's almost done,
you can move to Addison and live with my parents and Mark until you
have the baby...” I sighed.

“I'll think about it.”

“Lou, come on.”

“I have to go, Evan, I have school tomorrow.” He nodded and let go of my
arm as I got in to my car.

“Lou...”

“Bye, Evan.” I started my car and raced on to the street, leaving him
standing, alone, in the middle of the church parking lot. I raced down
the street towards my house, not paying attention to anything going on
around me. When I reached the first stop light, I realized that Evan
was right. I could move to Addison, and have the baby there...I fished
through my purse for my phone while the light was still red, and hit
speed dial number 8. Evan picked up on the first ring.

“Hi.”

“You're right.” I said, not noticing that the light had turned green.
“Moving to Addison would be okay.”

“Good, I'm glad you feel that way. When are you going to tell Mark?”

“Tomorrow.” I grimaced as out of the corner of my eye I saw the light
change from green to yellow. I hit the gas, not seeing the change from
yellow to red, and also not noticing the suburban flying in the other
direction. Evan was blabbering on about something when I finally saw
it, and screamed. The suburban hit the drivers' side and the last thing
I heard was Evan's voice.

“Lou, are you okay? Lou, talk to me, come on, talk to me, Lou.”

The door to my hospital room creaked open and without even looking I
knew who it was. He had been there since the accident; the doctor told
me that he was pacing outside my room. One of the nurses had called
Evan my boyfriend, and I had choked on the water I had been drinking.
“He's not my boyfriend.” I had managed to get out. “He's my youth
pastor.”

“How are you?” He asked, sitting next to the bed.

“Okay, I guess.”

“Look, I know this isn't really the right time to ask you this, but you
aren't going to change your mind about Addison, are you?”

“It doesn't matter anymore, Evan.”

“What, you're parents want you to stay here?”

“No.” I looked down. “Because of the accident, I broke two ribs, bruised
a third, sprained my wrist...and lost the baby.” Evan gripped my hand.

“I'm sorry, Lou.”

“No you're not. One less thing for you to worry about, right?”

“Louisa Jane...”

“Don't do that. You sound like my father.” Evan grimaced.

“Sorry.”

“As sad as it is, Evan, I'm okay. I really am.” He nodded and squeezed
my hand.

“Did the doctor say when you'll be out of here?”

“Sometime next week.” He nodded.

“They only gave me like 2 minutes, so I have to go, but I'll come back,
okay?” I nodded, forcing tears back. He kissed my forehead and left,
and as soon as the door shut, I burst in to tears. Yeah, having a baby
now would have been a bad thing, but for some odd reason, I had
actually been excited.
