MY MORAL COLLAPSE AND THE AMAZING RECOVERY OF THE SELF

Now was it before or after the first waves? I think it was before but
that can't be right. Can it? For the longest time I thought the waves
had created it, but no it was me, well mostly me. It doesn't matter
now, it can't be changed again not be me anyhow. The point is that it
happened, the when is irrelevant. It could have come upon me at any
point in my life and still had the same effect and it did many times.
All right this probably isn't making much sense yet but it will, just
don't expect it to be any sort of satisfying clarity that will let your
mind rest easy, just the opposite in fact. So let's go back and start
at time just before the first wave. Africa, 10 000 years ago.

I did live a life back then, for a short while. I was a hunter for my
tribe and not a very poor one. My wife and children were well spoken of
in the tribe and the stories of the great hunts my father and
grandfather had been on were well known and told before each new hunt.
The spear was an excellent weapon, one of skill and great patience.
Between hunts I would craft the finest heads and secure them tightly to
the strongest and straightest of shafts. The art of spear making far
out weighed the time I had spent as a rocket technician in Europe of
194-.

My best friend, who happened to be my wives brother, would sit with me
before hunts and tell me of all the new discoveries he had made as the
shamans' apprentice. He was far younger than I but knew of things I
could never have imagined in that life. He had once tried to explain to
me the process of reading the night skies and the way in which the
stars moved in order to predict the best time to organize a hunt and
what to hunt for. It was far beyond me and I replied,

“What you have told me is to far from my world to understand. I am sure
if I did it would all be fantastic and give rise to deep feelings with
in me, but as I do not understand it only sounds as a jumble of words
and distorted ideas I cant wrap my mind around. You are a great
apprentice and one day will make a superb shaman and that is the world
in which you live. Those are shaman ideas running through your head,
and it is in a shaman language you speak and the path you walk is one
devoted strictly to the stars and the trees, and all this is good. I
walk the path of the spear and the animals, the words I speak are of
the warrior, and my minds thoughts are that of the hunt, and all this
is good. We each live and act in these separate worlds and we don't
need to know how each others works to live beside it. You tell me when
to hunt because your world tells you when the best time is, I catch the
prey because my world shows me how. We both are working for the tribe
and our families.”

My brother in-law thought on this for a moment and said. “If I let you
tell me about hunting can I tell you more of the stars?”

I wish I knew only one world, one life. I wish I had lived and died
there in Africa and that was the end. It alone could have made a good
story. You and me could both sleep easy at night with no memory of it
coming or going. What a beautiful sleep it would be.
