This chapter takes place after the man enters Allison's apartment. | |||
2. Unexpected News Allison froze as she felt the blade of the knife press against her throat. She gasped as the man pressed harder. Fear had rendered her speechless, she stood stiffly, thinking of a way to distract him. She began to pull away. “Don't fight me! Just die nice and easy!” “Like hell!” Allison wrestled with the man, twisting his arm getting him to drop the knife. She thought she had won that round, but he quickly retrieved it and began to chase her around the apartment. “No! stop! Get away from me! I swear I'll kill you!” “Like I'm scared of you, Allison? Get real! I'll take you down!” he cornered her, she wriggled to get free of his grasp, but he proved too strong. The knife was inches away from her throat, as the man tried to pin her to the floor. Allison dug her nails into the man's palm, and screamed for help. But her cries went unanswered. Scarlet sprang into action. “Come on, Allison, you can make this easy, or hard! Which is it going to be?” “I'm not letting you kill me!” Allison picked up an antique vase and threw it at the man. Glass shattered everywhere, creating a virtual minefield. But even the threat of injury didn't deter the man. She tried furiously to wrestle the knife from his hand. The blade cut her hand and blood started to gush everywhere. “You stupid fool! Now I can silence you, permanently!. Say goodbye to your life as you know it!” he was just about to slit her throat, when Scarlet fluttered into the room. He bit the man's hand and he whirled around. “What the hell!” he exclaimed as Scarlet began to chew a hole in his hand. “Well, birdie, you'll make a nice Thanksgiving meal!” he raised the knife to Scarlet. Allison got up slowly and tackled the man. “You arrogant little son of a ...” “I'll kill your bird!” “Like hell you will!” Allison tried to rest the knife from the man's hand. Scarlet continued to squawk and bite him. “Scarlet, come here. Scarlet! Come here, sweetheart!” Scarlet flew to Allison. While the man's back was turned she grabbed the portable phone. “Don't even think about it!” the man said producing the gun he had kept concealed. He hit Allison over the head, she crumpled to the floor. He waited several minutes before leaving, closing the door behind him. “Did you do it?” Chad asked as Slim entered. “Yes, Boss. We won't have to worry about Allison Shure anymore.” “Good work!” Chad said, he celebrated by drinking a glass of wine and toasting their future success. Connor was working diligently at his desk, when he got the strangest feeling. He wondered how Allison was doing. He felt extremely guilty about working late, and promised himself that he would make it up to her. He picked up the phone and dialed. No answer. He thought this was a little strange, but then thought she might be sleeping and not hear the phone. He recalled that she had told him she had been up the night before, she must be tired, he thought. Connor was glad when 10 o'clock rolled around. He gathered his belongings and headed out to his car. He entered the apartment quietly, he didn't want to disturb Allison, by this point, he had assumed she was sleeping. He thought it was very strange that the apartment was dark. Allison always left a light on for him. Scarlet's cage door was open, this was also strange. Connor set down his briefcase and went to investigate. Alarm bells began to go off in his head. This was highly unusual, where was Allison? “Allison?” he waited for her to respond, but there was no answer. He saw the broken glass from the vase and wondered what had happened. The apartment had been torn apart, apparently ransacked. Panic filled his heart as his calls to Allison went unanswered. “Allie? Honey?” still no answer. Suddenly, Scarlet flew out of nowhere he began squawking and landed on Connor's head. “Damn bird! What the hell do you want?” Scarlet squawked and dug his nails into Connor's scalp. “Ow! That hurts! Get off my head!” Connor put Scarlet on his shoulder. But seconds later, Scarlet was off and flying again. “Where are you going?” Connor followed Scarlet's flight and watched as he landed next to something. He bent down to see what it was. He couldn't see a thing, and turned on the lamp for illumination. He gasped as he saw her. “Oh my God, Allie!” Connor gently reached out and touched her, blood was trickling from her head, and there was a wound on her hand. “No! no! it can't be!” sobs wracked him as he felt for a pulse. He thought she was dead, but her pulse was strong. “Allison, can you hear me?” he shook her gently hoping that would rouse her. But she didn't respond. “Allison! wake up, please! Come on, sweetness wake up!” Connor put Scarlet back in his cage and picked up Allison. Within minutes, he was en route to Fallwood General Hospital.
