For a friend of mine...

“Come along children, don't linger behind.”

“Yes Mother”, my brother and I answered in unison.

“Take a deep breath and follow me”, she told us firmly.

The sky above was white and cold. There were no holes to breath, yet we
followed mother with a child's trust. As the minutes past, my lungs
felt as if they were going to burst. I needed fresh air.

“Just a little further children.” I think she knew the fear of drowning
was in our thoughts. As I grew up, I learned that she actually read
our minds.

“There it is, just up ahead.”

I didn't know if my breath would hold a little longer. Then a strange
thing happened to me. I felt as if my mother was inside me, adding an
extra breath of air. The opening seemed well within reach then. Gazing
over at my brother, he had a look of astonishment on his face. As I
found out later, the same thing happened to him.

We arrived at the hole in the sky and took a deep refreshing breath. I
looked up at the midnight blue sky and felt safe in her sanctuary.

That was the first and last time I was there with my Mother and Brother.
The floating things killed her the next season and my brother and I
drifted apart.

Years later I brought my children to this place. As we were under the
white sky, I could read their thoughts and put myself within them.
Feeling the fear they held was hard for me, but once they saw the blue
midnight sky, I felt the same exhilaration my Mother must have felt.
