I spend a few moments in the school auditorium. | |||
The Stage The lights flicker, pulsing, almost as if they were alive. I walk in the doorway leading backstage, and walk out on the stage. Slowly, deliberately, I put one foot down, then another, testing the stage. I wander around for a while. I circle the Dunkin Donuts counter, trailing my fingers along the edge. I pace forward to the red curtains. They were made of velvet, and were heavier than I thought they would be. I crossed the front of the stage. Sitting on the couch, I looked out at the audience. Empty seats, two doors, the light box. To my right, across the stage, was another door. In front of me, and little to the to the left, was a piano. Wondering if I could play it, I walked down the steps. Looking inside of the piano, I saw a piece of paper, and some candy wrappers. Why would anyone do that? I ran my fingers over the keys. Even though I could hear the kids outside, the piano and stage still filled me with peace, quiet, and a sense of awe. I looked at my watch. 15 minutes had gone by, and I had to go. Sighing, I walked across the stage and out the door, leaving the living being called an auditorium behind. Tweet
