CHANGES CONTINUE (By Hopes)

CHANGES CONTINUE

How could so many good things occur at once? Jim would be graduating
the end of May. Gran and Gramps would celebrate their 40th anniversary
the second of June. And most exciting of all to David, he and Jan's
baby would come within those few days. The actual due date was May 30,
but he knew that babies had their own timing.

Jan and David had only been married four months when she found out she
was pregnant. David had come in to a quiet house. It was obvious that
the boys were not home and he knew Andy and Alex were at his parents'.
He followed the delicious smell of his wife's cooking to the kitchen.
She wasn't there but the table was set beautifully with candles for
three. He wondered who their guest was. He glanced at the third place
and stopped. Why was a teddy bear sitting there in a high chair? They
didn't have a high chair in the house. They didn't need one. He
turned to call to Jan and stopped cold. He ran upstairs to their
suite, but she wasn't there. He ran back down to the living room and
found Jan sitting in a new rocking chair looking at a New Parents
magazine. She looked up at him with a simple smile.

“How was your trip?” she asked calmly.

“My trip...my trip...for get my trip what are you trying to tell me?!
The high chair, the teddy bear, what do they mean?” He was jabbering
in a most unusual manner and Jan could barely contain her laughter, but
continued stoically.

“Oh, I thought they might come in handy some time soon.”

“JAN!” David was going crazy.

Suddenly she burst out laughing. “We're going to have a baby, David.
You and I are going to be parents around the end of May.”

For several moments he just stood there looking at her. Knowing the
possibility of something and finding out that it is a fact are two very
different things. A myriad of emotions went through his mind; terror,
fear, excitement, pride, concern, and then a thrill of happiness. He
took Jan's hand and pulled her up into his arms.

“You will be a wonderful mother.” He kissed her until she was
breathless.

“I have no doubt that you will be as wonderful a father to our child as
you have been to Jim and Andy.” As she returned his kiss, he picked
her up and sat down on the couch with her. They sat quietly for a
while, deep in their own new thoughts of parenthood.

Finally, Jan stood up and took his hand. “Let's eat.”

Jan told him she had been to the doctor that day and had told no one
else. They quickly cleaned up the kitchen together. They called her
parents with the news and then went over to his parents' house.
Needless to say, all were thrilled at the news. Pete and Jim seemed
excited too, but David noticed an odd look on Jim's face as they went
up to Pete's room. He made a mental note to talk to him before bed
tonight.

Shortly the three of them went home and got ready for bed. Jan had
joined David in his practice of going in to say good night after Jim
was in bed. They did so tonight and then Jan went out. She knew David
wanted to talk to Jim.

“Jim, are you ok with the news about the baby?”

“Yeah, I think it's great. I was just a little surprised.”

“You and me both, fella!”

“Do you know if you will have a boy or girl?”
