Life happens to everyone. Sometimes it is hard. Everyone must make choices. Not all people make the right ones. | |||
SADIE WITH THE ONE ARM They called her ‘Sadie with the one arm' in the same way they said, ‘Fat Annie', to distinguish her from Aunt Sadie, Uncle John's wife, or Aunt Sadie, Uncle Ed's wife. Sadie with the one arm was my father's cousin. She lived several blocks from us and sometimes we would pass her as she stood on the bus corner. Daddy would lower the window, “Sadie!” She would wave with the one arm. She had two arms before the accident in the factory. After that she had money. Then she tied her life up with an older man from the seamy side, (our family didn't approve of the life style) and soon all the money was drunk away. My father didn't approve at all. The money was gone but what she had was a baby, Peggy. Then we would see Sadie on the bus stop with the little girl. It was the two of them after that, but I never knew Peggy. Daddy tried to extend himself but they lived on different planets—and Sadie didn't want to leave hers. Daddy couldn't. One day she was gone. After that sometimes we saw Peggy waiting alone for the bus. Life is about choices- and second chances- taken-or missed! Tweet
