Prologue of what may grow to be a novel. | |||
Such a beautiful place, he thought. She would've loved it. A tear slid down his cheek, evaporating quickly in the cold wind. If she'd lived. The late afternoon sun slanted to the earth through breaks in the slate gray clouds. It brought light but no warmth. He felt the coming snow carried on the wind. Darker clouds on the far western horizon promised winter weather before dawn. Turning his face to the wind to dry his tears, the man gazed along the choppy waters of the river flowing by a hundred feet below. As far as his eye could see in every direction lay forest and mountain. Much of the forest lay leafless, waiting on the the distant spring to green up again. Farther out and up on the mountains, lodgepole pines, spruce, and fir decorated the scenery. Closer, some of the aspen still clung to golden leaves that would soon join their brothers making rich soil out on the mountain meadows. Beautiful as all that stretched befor ehim might seem to anyone else, it brought no joy to the man. Even after two years, his heart still lay on the ground at his feet. Lay there in front of the simple granite tombstone inscribed with her Indian name: Cloud Dancer. Just as it did every time he visited this place, the sight of her grave led the man to remember. Tweet
