A winter storm is on the horizon and a family waits. | |||
WINTER IN PENNSYLVANIA Snow comes down like feathers from an angel pillow fight and unseen spirits blow it in circles—back to the sky. The old man tries to shovel 'to keep ahead of it.' They may need groceries in the morning. The little boy wants to make a snowman. “Mama, can I have a hat?” “Wait until morning. It's bedtime now. Tomorrow I'll help you.” The thin girl in the blue sweater prays for more snow so school will be canceled. Her homework isn't done. “Listen for the weather report. Will we need milk?” “Son, let the dog out. Put your coat on. Close the door.” The fresh cold air sneaks into the warm stuffy room and the elderly lady pulls her sweater closer around her shoulders, and makes some instant coffee—decaf, because it's late. “Are there any of those chocolate cookies left?” Snow settles on the branches of the pine tree and gives it the appearance of a Christmas card. There is an excitement in the air—the clean expectant cozy feeling of a good snowstorm. The mother turns on the dishwasher and switches off the kitchen light. She looks out of the window again. There are headlights in the driveway, and the sound of the familiar car door slamming shut. She breathes a sigh of relief and says. “We're all home now. Let's make some popcorn.” Tweet
