Charity Pays Off

by J P St. Jullian

Sister Agnes was elated! She'd just been given a letter from home. She
rushed up to her second floor room to read it. She pulled a chair up
to the window and opened the letter. As she did this, a ten dollar
bill fell out of the envelope. She was most pleased at receiving such
a generous gift from her home folks, but as she sat in the window
reading the letter she was distracted by the actions of a shabbily
dressed stranger who was leaning against a post in front of the
convent.

She tried to finish reading her letter, but she couldn't get the poor
man off her mind. Thinking that he might be in financial difficulties,
she took the ten dollar bill and wrapped it in a piece of paper, on
which she had written, "Don't Despair, Sister Agnes," and she threw it
out of the window to him. He picked it up, read it, looked at her with
a puzzled expression, tipped his hat to her, and went off down the
street.

The next day, she was in her cell saying her prayers when she was told
that some man was at her door who insisted on seeing her. She went
down and found the same shabbily dressed stranger from the day before,
waiting for her. Without saying a word, the stranger handed her a
small roll of bills. When she asked what the money was for, he
replied, "Well, Sister, that's the sixty bucks you got coming. Don't
Despair came in first and paid 5-to-1!"
