Sonya Red By: Spencer D. Taylor The girl stood over the grave, and sighed. Her long hair flowed in the blowing wind. The red color of her hair faded to a dark orange as the evening sun set over the horizon. She had eyes that sparkled in the setting glow of the sun, and her skin was a faint golden color. Her lips, like her hair, where a faint red like color. Her small frail body stood alone on the hill. She looked about the small area in which she stood, and noted that she was alone. She was happy to be alone, but turned sad at the fact of where she was alone at. She bowed her head at the small headstone placed in the ground. She looked at it, and felt a tear run down her cheek. She read the stone: Here lies: Eric Burton Born: April 25 2309 Died: June 15 2322 A great man, and too young to have his life taken from him. Such a young man deserved his life, and that which has taken him will soon join him in eternal sleep. The sight of it made her cry, but she held back her tears every time. She didn't want to feel the pain of Eric's death, but she knew she had to. “Eric, you truly were a man.” she said. “Sonya!!!” yelled a voice from behind her. She turned and saw a young boy running up the hill to her. She smiled at the boy, and called back. “Hey Jim! Where ya been at all this time?” she asked. “Sorry, but the traffic on Elger Road was hell.” Jim replied. She smiled, and Jim knew that she was forgiving. Jim was a tall young man with long brown hair, and light blue eyes. His face seemed to match Sonya's perfectly. They looked like they might have been twins, but maybe that's what made them such good friends. Jim motioned towards his car, and Sonya walked to it with him. They got in, and drove away from the hill. Jim looked over at Sonya, and saw the sadness in her even though she was smiling. “Hey, Eric's death shouldn't haunt you forever. I understand that you really cared for him, but it could be worse. I mean, what if he hadn't taken that bullet for ya? You'd be dead, and he'd be cryin' over you every day for the rest of his life.” Jim stated as she looked at him. “You're right Jim,” she replied “maybe I should just go on and think of all I have to live for.” “That's right. Heck if you die where would I go from there?” he asked. Sonya looked at him with a bit of light reflecting off her eyes. She wanted to say something, but she didn't. She knew that she was the reason for Eric's death, but she wasn't going to let that stop her from living her life like a regular kid her age. “Hey Sonya, I got somethin' to ask ya.” “Sure thing Jim, what is it??” she replied smiling. Jim just stared at her, and then looked back at the road. “Well? You gonna' ask me or not Jim?” she said sharply. “Oh yeah, well I really wanted to tell you something.” he said. “Well then speak boy.” “Well I was sorta' hopein' to tell you this sooner, but.......” he Click here to read the rest of this story (920 more lines)
