Assume (standard:poetry, 116 words)

Sometimes we make the wrong assumptions, letting loneliness take us over.

If you open your eyes

and see only darkness

do you assume that you

can no longer see?

.

If you strain your ears

and hear only silence

do you assume that you

can no longer hear?

.

If you lick your lips

and taste only nothing

do you assume that you

can no longer taste?

.

If you extend your arms

and close on emptiness

do you assume that there

is no one there?

.

I will tell you this.

.

If you open your eyes

see me

If you strain your ears

hear me.

.

If you lick your lips

taste me

If you hold out your arms

hold me.

.

I am there.
