Laugh if you will at a very unlucky lady who was granted her deepest desire. | |||
Jordana had a secret. But you wouldn't know it to look into her eyes. They were big, brown. Innocent. The color of wet sand in Mexico. And hadn't everyone said that eyes were the windows to a person's soul? Of course, her secret was she had no soul, having sold it to the devil long ago. It had seemed the ideal thing to do at the time. She had been miserable with her life. Miserable. She laughed humorlessly. If only she had known then what she knew now... but "if only" wasn't a game she liked to play. It was liable to drive her mad. Life everlasting. It had sounded lovely, once upon a time. Now... now she'd give anything to die. She was weary, bored, frustrated...and oh so tired! Tired to the bottom of her soul. But then, she had no soul, did she? Sighing, she twirled her hair around her finger, watching the children in their gaudy costumes ring people doorbells. Silly children and their silly games. "H'llo," a friendly voiced said from behind her. Startled, Jordana stood, turning sharply, only to hit her nose on the man's chest. Grumbling, rubbing her nose, she looked up into a familiar pair of green eyes. "Oh, it's you," she mumbled. "Now Jordi, is that any way to greet the person who gave you your deepest desire?" he asked. Jordana shrugged. Her deepest desire had since become her darkest hell. He stepped closer, putting a slender finger beneath her pretty chin and tilting her face up. "Jordi," he finally said, "I do believe you are unhappy." Again, she shrugged. Nodding, he settled down on the bench, pulling her beside him. "Do you regret your decision to live on earth forever?" "You know I do!" she said angrily. "And you knew I would. You told me it wasn't what I thought it would be, and I... I of course ignored you. But still, it was evil of you to offer something you knew would make me miserable." He blinked at her, then he tossed his head back and laughed. The children around them paused, starring. Then shuddering, hurried past. "Evil am I?" he shook his head, chuckling. "Ah Jordi, you amuse me. I truly do like you. Tell me, if I were to offer you your soul back, and let you die a peaceful death... would you do something for me?" Jordana swallowed, letting her lashes fall, covering her eyes from his gaze. Truly? Was he serious? Or was it another game he was playing to amuse himself? "Yes," she whispered. "Anything." "Anything?" he smiled, his lips pulled back, his sharp teeth gleaming white against his dark skin. Staring into his impossibly green eyes, she nodded. "Anything." * * * Jordana awoke in a hammock, the sun unbearably hot. Squeezing her eyes shut, she rubbed her bare arm, wincing. She was sunburned. All over, it seemed. Why had she fallen asleep in direct sunlight in nothing but a bikini? Sighing, she sat up, swinging her legs onto the ground. "What...?" she gasped, her feet coming in contact with something wriggly and... gooey. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, she cautiously looked down at the ground, only to close her eyes in horror. The ground was covered in maggots. "Jordi, you're awake," a voice said from behind her. Sick with sudden dawning, Jordana turned to look into the devils green eyes. He smiled at her, bending at the waist and bowing to her. "Welcome, dearest, to my humble abode. I call it home, but it is commonly referred to as Hell." Trembling, burning, her throat aching with unshed tears, Jordana began to scream, one thought going through her mind. If only she had known then what she knew now. Tweet
