Heidi opens her soul to Aaron. | |||
As I approached my locker I saw that something was not right. Something was scratched into the paint. As I got closer I could make out the words. They were horrible. How could anybody treat another person this way. I sat there and just stared at the words. From behind me I heard snickering. I was only able to catch a brief glimpse of the person as he ran out of the building. I was embarrassed – and I was angry. I turned on my heel and marched back to Mr. James’ office. I knocked as I walked in. “Heidi?” Mr. James asked as I walked in. “What’s wrong?” I was fuming. I had had enough. “Mr. James, I’d like you to come look at my locker please. I have something to show you.” He walked with me back to my locker, class had not yet let out, but the building would be filled with students very soon. When we got to my locker, Mr. James just stood there looking at the words. “I’ll bet we can both guess who did it.” I said. “I am so sorry Heidi. This will be taken care of right now. Come with me.” We went back to his office. Mr. James made arrangements with the custodian to sand and paint over the offensive words as soon as the locker area cleared for the next class. Until then he instructed the custodian to tape and paper over the words immediately. “Did you see this happen?” Mr. James asked after he relayed his instructions. “No, but I heard someone laughing from behind me. As soon as I turned around he was gone. I only caught a quick look.” “Then we don’t know it was Kyle.” “Mr. James, please. Who else could it have been?” I was still angry. “I want something done about Kyle. I have put up with this long enough.” “I’ll call him in and talk to him.” His tone softened as he continued. “I know it was probably Kyle, but we can’t prove it. All I can do is talk to him.” “What am I supposed to do in the mean time? Just put up with it. Don’t I deserve to feel safe and comfortable in my own school? Don’t I deserve to be happy.” My anger was replaced by sadness. I couldn’t hold back my tears any longer. “Why do people have to be so mean.” Tears began to slide down my cheeks. Mr. James came around and put his arm on my shoulder and looked into my eyes. “I don’t know why some people can be so cruel. You don’t deserve it. No-one deserves to be mistreated by others because of who they are or what they look like. I wish I could make it all go away, but I can’t. I’m sorry.” I just sat there and cried until the tears could come no more. “Are you going to be okay?” He asked I looked up at him. “Do you mean am I going to go home and try to kill myself again?” “Well...Yeah.” I know as a school counselor he has dealt with a lot of different issues, but this was obviously not easy for him. “I guess I do mean that. Maybe I should call your folks and Dr. Lane.” “You don’t have to.” I wiped the remainder of my tears from my face. “You can, but you don’t have to. I’ve had enough of Kyle. I’m not going to let him do this to me anymore. If I let him get to me, he wins. I’m not going to let him hurt me anymore. I’m certainly not going to give him the satisfaction of ruining my life and the lives of everyone I love by killing myself.” I looked up at him. “No. I am not going to hurt myself. I promise.” Mr. James looked relived. “I’m very happy to hear you say that. Still, I think I should give your parents and Dr. Lane a call, just to keep them in the loop, okay?” Click here to read the rest of this story (406 more lines)
