Heidi can't avoid Aaron any longer. | |||
It’s always a little embarrassing to walk into a classroom when the class has already begun. It felt as if every eye in the room was turned on me. I ignored everyone as I hurried to my desk up front. My French teacher briefly glanced at me, but made no comment. She just continued with her lesson. Before I knew it, class was over, and my lunch period had begun. I picked up my books and headed toward the lockers and the cafeteria. I didn’t know if Kyle’s lunch period had been changed, yet, so I wanted to get my lunch and disappear as quickly as I could. I was hoping to avoid him better today than I had yesterday. I was in such a hurry as I turned a corner that I bumped right into someone. Both myself and my victim fell to the ground. Books and papers went flying in all directions. I was so embarrassed. “Oh, I’m so sorry.” I looked up from gathering my papers to see that I had ran right into David. “No, I’m sorry.” He said without meeting my eyes. “I wasn’t looking where I was going. Here. Let me help.” We spent the next few minutes gathering and sorting our books and papers. “I think that’s it.” He stood up. “I’m really sorry.” “David, it’s not your fault. I was just in a hurry. They should put mirrors up so we can see around corners.” I joked. “Still, I’m sorry.” He mumbled and walked away. David was so shy. I just knew he could have everything I so desperately dreamed of if he just made the effort. Maybe that’s it. Maybe he didn’t want the same things I wanted. Absently, I wondered if he was going to the prom, and if so, with whom. If he would just give himself a chance, I know he could find someone that would make him happy. It seemed like such a waste. Then again, what was I talking about. I hardly knew him. None of us did. Besides, I had my own problems to deal with. I managed to get to my locker without colliding with anyone else. When I opened my locker a saw a slip of paper flutter to the ground. The last time someone slid a note through the vents in our locker it was from Aaron. I picked it up and looked at it. It wasn’t for me. Jody’s name was scrawled across the outside of the folded paper. I was a bit disappointed. I had an almost uncontrollable urge to peek at the note, but I didn’t. Besides, I knew that Jody would tell me everything that was in it anyway. I put it neatly on her stack of books on the top shelf where I was sure she wouldn’t miss it. My suspicion was that it was from Clark. I took my library book from my backpack and closed the locker door. Since my run-in with David I got to my locker later than I had expected. This worked to my advantage. As I was heading to the cafeteria lunch line, I saw Kyle and his cronies leaving the building. Well, it looked like Kyle’s lunch period hadn’t changed, yet, but at least he was already through the lunch line and on his merry way. I went through the line and chose the least offensive items being served. I sat at a table in the corner of the cafeteria near the exit and away from the groups of cliques, rowdy guys and giggling girls. I ate my lunch in peace and read, all the while wishing that Jody and I had the same lunch period, and hoping that we would next term. Just as I was finishing my lunch I saw a shadow fall over my book. I looked up to see Aaron. All of a sudden the memory of our telephone conversation from last night came rushing to my mind. I was totally embarrassed all over again. This beautiful person actually knew I thought he was cute. I believe my exact words were ‘You have the face of an angel’. I didn’t know how to act now that I had bared part of my soul. “How’s the book coming?” He didn’t seem as cheerful as he has been Click here to read the rest of this story (477 more lines)
