A tragedy... | |||
The Ball Game Blue lights strobe the scene. The night is filled with the intermittent cracklings of radio messages and more approaching sirens. “There's nothing here for you to see folks. Get along home.” Says a cop to a small crowd gathering, rain dripping from his cap. One person moves away. A body hangs lifeless from a bridge. Her dress clings tightly to her hips, one shoe missing from her right foot, another lying in the roadway, yellow tape marking its place. A sudden shot of lightning converts the scene into something only Hollywood could have thought up. A fireman climbs the extended ladder, a blanket over one oilskin protected arm. He does not attempt to cut her free, instead he covers the grotesque dangling sculpture with the blanket, securing it with a strap and climbs back down. A few people drift away, collars raised, heads bowed. Photographers jockey for position. The fireman steps clear of the ladder, I hear him say: “It's just a guy, bloody pervert.” In answer his pal replies: “Thank God, I'm taking my boys to a ball game tonight. Girl suicides do my head in!” Tweet
