My mother named me E'willer, after a woman on my fathers side of the family called E'riller. I caught hell growing up with that crazy name. Then one day, not that long ago, I researched my name and discovered things I wished I had known growing up. | |||
I was born in Wadley Georgia in a dirt row shack, snakes and shoes, shoes and snakes. My mama made up her mind to name me E'willer after a cousin on her husband's side of the family, her cousin in law E'riller, a hard name, a shy name, rough...like the ugliest pair of curtains draped. E'willer isn't a cotton candy name, soft and sweet. It was the topic of neighborhood jokes, pretty girls laughed and boy's rolled. Pennies made gaps between my teeth to match my ugly name, a name that ruined my life after my mama laid with my daddy wearing a smile. My smile, yesterdays pennies grown up. I lived up to my ugly name too, more rough and ignorant than words from strangers I lived up to my ugly name, ready to fight you if you breathed on me. I wished I had the kind of name that danced on the tip of your tongue like honey swirled over pancakes. One day I googled my name and to my reality this is what I discovered. E'willer is a surname a name centuries old that has evolved all over the world spelled differently in some places. The name E'willer has been taken from bits and pieces of the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita and the Holy Koran. My name means in certain terms, "Lamb of God'" a name pulled from history to bless my life. In fact I had lived all of these years in darkness concerning my name, a name I doubted meant anything other than ugly. I lived my life up with shame and confusion as my closest companions, after my mama laid with my daddy wearing a smile...my smile yesterday's pennies grown up, snakes and shoes, shoes and snakes.
