RED TREES The voodoo guru stood, fondling her amulet, as Jurgen lurched into the yurt. The guru spoke: "I am ready to learn. Are you prepared to teach?" Jurgen collapsed at her feet, moaning, drumming his sandals on the reed mat. "Heal me, heal me," he whimpered. Kneeling, the guru reached her healing hands across the disciple's shoulders and with deft precision drove her fingertips deep into three key acupressure points. Jurgen went limp, then stiffened with a shiver and leaped to his feet. A geyser of love energy surged up in him as he whispered, "Thank you, Holy Fountain of Wisdom and Craft!" "Now," she replied, "teach me." "How can I teach when I know so little, wise One?". He blushed as her features smiled and softened behind her piercing eyes. "Come, tell me everything you know," she said, "about giant trees that turn glowing red at sunset!" Jurgen looked puzzled. "Giant trees, glowing red?" he queried. "You know what trees are. Tell me everything." There was a moment of silence, then he began, "Trees grow in the ground. Some are very tall. Their trunks ..." She stopped him with a gesture. "...and the trunks. How are they?" "Well, they are big and round and covered with bark and moss." The voodoo guru sat erect, her goatskin-clad breasts alive in the firelight. "Bark?" she asked, "Moss?" "The bark," began Jurgen, "covers the trunk, and moss is that icky green stuff that grows on the bark. North side, I think." "And the sun. Tell me about the sun." Her face glowed with approval. Her disciple grinned back, echoing her pleasure. "The sun shines every day. Some days clouds hide it, but in late summer the sun shines every day. Late in the afternoon, when the sun is setting, it glows red, sometimes." He cocked his head to one side, dug his hand into his leather carriel and pulled out a peach. Holding it out, he offered: "Fruit?" but deep within he realized "she is a goddess". The goddess leaned toward him, grasped his hand with the peach and slowly brought it to her dark, full lips. Between his fingers he felt her ivory teeth nibbling, nibbling, savoring. Their eyes met in the silence, invitingly. She sat back. "At sunset, how are the rays of the sun?" He grasped her meaning instantly. "Infra-red!" he blurted. "We all learned that in science class, years ago." "Right. Tell me about this infra-red." "Well, for one thing, it is hot. Fast food restaurants use it to keep hamburgers warm." "And could it burn a tree?" she asked, reaching for the half-eaten peach. His brow furrowed. "No, I don't think so. It's hot enough to burn the moss away from the bark, I've noticed." "You mean the infra-red rays from the sun are not hot enough to set the tree on fire, but they are hot enough to kill the moss and dry it up, Click here to read the rest of this story (32 more lines)
