Sometimes we do things without realizing, or caring, what the consequences are. This is a story along those lines. It's a little graphic, sorry.

Helen is a good Southern woman, with good Southern values. Family comes
first, no matter what. You fight for your family, even if your family
isn't worth fighting for. That is the way most southern women are
raised. Jim, her husband, is a good Southern boy, with good Southern
values. If you can shoot it, kill it. If you can drink it, drink it
until you pass out. And, if you can screw it, screw it all night long.
It was the way he was raised, thankfully, not all southern men are
raised this way.

Jim has cheated on Helen from the get go. The weekend after they got
back from their honeymoon, Jim was in a strip club making out with one
of the dancers. When Helen was in labor with their first child, Jim was
making out with one of the nurses in the bathroom. He didn't care that
his wife was in pain, he only cared about getting the pleasures he
deserved out of life. Helen almost died while giving birth to their
youngest child and Jim was not even around. He was shacked up in a
motel with a hooker his bubby had gotten him for his birthday three
days earlier.

Tonight is going to change that. The day started out as a normal day,
Helen got up and made breakfast. Jim stumbles in the door as the kids
are leaving from school.

“Where have you been?” Helen challenges him. She knows there a good
chance she won't get the truth out of him, but she tries nonetheless.

“Does it matter?” Jim says as he fills his coffee cup up.

Helen can smell the perfume reeking from his clothes. “Well, did you
have fun?” She enquires as she cleans up the kitchen.

“Don't I always?” Jim laughs as he takes his first sip.

“I'm not going to be home tonight. I just wanted you to know.” Helen
states as she sits down at the kitchen table.

“Whatever.” Jim utters as he drinks the last sip. “I'm going to work.”

“Bye Dear.” Helen expresses sarcastically.

“Yeah, right.” Jim calls as he closes the back door.

“One of these days, you'll regret your choices.” Helen pronounces to the
empty room as she looks around. She gazes out the window and watches
Jim drive away. Helen regrets not standing up to him about his cheating
ways. But, she doesn't know how to change her life without spinning it
into totally chaos.

She gets up and cleans the house. Sometimes she begrudges this action
because her work goes unnoticed. Jim doesn't care what the house looks
like. It can be crumbling down around their ears before he would
notice. The kids don't care because they see it as just some place to
sleep, eat, and destroy. Helen realizes her life isn't worth much.

“Today changes all that.” Helen says with tears in her eyes. She goes
upstairs and starts the ritual of going out. Tonight is going to be
special if it kills her. She's planned this night for months and
nothing is going to stand in her way. Helen smiles for the first time
in a long time.

The phone rings as she makes her way into the bedroom. “Hello.” She says
to the caller.

“Hello gorgeous. I just wanted to call to see if we were still on for
tonight.” Freda, her best friend says.
