her.

Shea groaned and collapsed into mock sobbing onto Conor’s shoulder.

“Well, if isn’t Tweedledum and Tweedledee,” an icy voice cut through the
air.

Shea looked up quickly with anger to see exactly the person she thought
she would see. It was none other than Melissa Madison, with her clunky
jock idiot boyfriend, Jack Thompson, trailing behind.

“Well, if it isn’t the Birchwood village bicycle!” Shea countered
frigidly.

The blonde girl, who by way of looks was the stereotypical
cheerleader-dressed preppy, with an eyebrow arched high with assumed
superiority, and frosty blue eyes. On the outside she was perfect. It
was just a pity she didn’t have the personality to go with her looks.

“Very nice manners, Shea!” Melissa commented sarcastically.

Shea just glared at her.

“Jack, go check which one of these idiots in this pathetic class we’re
stuck with,” she ordered her boyfriend, a broad-shouldered football
player with thick red hair and about as much substance as an old tennis
shoe. Jack ran off obediently.

“Don’t hurt yourself trying to read, Jack,” Shea said acidly. “We’re
stuck with you. Chrissy Dearborn is the last in the group.” Melissa
opened her mouth wide and made a ‘huh’ sound, her eyes expressing
disbelief at her amazing misfortune.

“We’re stuck with you two, and Chrissy Queerborn?” she asked
incredulously. “God. I can just die a happy girl now!”

Shea bristled and Conor shook his head with annoyance at Melissa’s
immaturity.

“Wow, Melissa...I thought we stopped using sexual preference slang to
insult people back in sixth grade, but I guess you’re a little behind
the times,” Conor said.

“Have patience with her, Conor, her brain isn’t as fast as ours. She
has trouble processing these things,” Shea said, patting Conor
reassuringly. She turned back to Melissa, her eyes blazing.

“Chrissy isn’t gay, and you know it, so I suggest you stop calling her
that juvenile name. Even if she was, if you’re too insecure to deal
with it, maybe you should go back to second grade where you belong!”
she snapped.

“At least Melissa doesn’t hang out with fags like Conor!” Jack piped up
from behind Melissa.

Conor and Shea looked at each other and laughed.

“Another gay reference! A match made in hell!” Conor declared joyfully.
“Yes, Jake. I’m gay. I’ve had a crush on you forever. Do you want
to make out?” Conor asked sarcastically, advancing toward the
unsuspecting athlete.

Shea laughed at this. Conor wasn’t gay, but he knew that Jack was a
homophobe, so he used it to his advantage.

After threatening Conor with a face bashing, the first bell rang and
Jack and the other students walked off their separate ways. The day
went by quickly, because it was Friday at last, and they were all
together again for film class before they knew it.

Mr. Peterson talked for most of the class about the groups, and how he
had carefully chosen them for reasons that would not be revealed to the
students, but they would have to learn to cooperate with each other or
they would fail this project and most likely the class. He suggested
that the groups meet to discuss their projects. The groups congregated
for the last ten minutes of class to discuss things.

“Remember, in this class we do things the American way! Majority
rules!” Mr. Peterson advised them.

Shea, Conor, Melissa, Jack, and Chrissy all met at the far end of the
class to discuss things. Shea could feel the tension surrounding them,
and tried to keep her cool like Conor always did. Chrissy, a shy girl
with curly light brown hair, looked at them almost serenely. It was
true that she was a little eccentric, and that she practiced Paganism.
The girl was the nicest in the class, however, and Shea and Conor saw
no reason to discriminate against her just because she had an eyebrow
piercing and wore black all the time.

“I’m glad I’m with you guys,” she confided to Shea and Conor.

They smiled encouragingly to her.

“Okay, guys,” Shea started, taking the lead as always. “Conor and I
have discussed this, and we really want to do a mystery film. How do
you feel about that, Chrissy?” she asked the quiet girl.

Chrissy opened her mouth to speak, but Jack interrupted her raucously.

“Cool! Like with detectives and stuff?” he asked excitedly.

“No, Conor and I were thinking more supernatural. Like X-Files,” Shea
explained patiently.

“I don’t like that kind of stuff!” Jack argued. “It’s stupid!”

“I agree. Supernatural crap is so over,” Melissa said in her snobby
way, her arms folded defiantly.

“Okay, Chrissy, what do you think?” Shea asked again, praying Chrissy
would agree, because then it would be three to two-majority ruled.

“I think that’s a great idea. I love the paranormal!” she agreed.

Shea and Conor smiled at each other happily.

“You are paranormal!” Melissa snapped at fragile Chrissy. “As for you
two, we are doing a detective mystery!”

Shea started getting mad again.

“Um, no, we’re not,” she said very slowly so Melissa would understand.
“Mr. Peterson says majority rules, and three beats two.”

Melissa hissed angrily.

“It isn’t enough that I am stuck with two geeks and a freak, but I have
to do a freak movie too? Jesus, I wish I’d never taken this class!”
she muttered.

“Oh, the feeling is mutual!” Shea thought.

“Okay, that’s settled. I’ve been thinking about it, and you know
Birchwood Catholic Church?” Conor continued.

“Know it? My mom practically lives there!” Shea exaggerated.

“Well, I’ve heard for years that it’s haunted, and my idea is for us to
go check it out,” Conor told everyone.

“A haunted church?” Melissa asked dully.

“Yeah, it’s supposed to be mad haunted,” Conor elaborated.

“Whatever. As long as I don’t have to do anything,” Melissa said.

Shea was about to protest, but Conor stopped her.

“Fine. Do nothing. Chrissy, Shea, and I will do the work, and you can
just sit and look pretty with your boyfriend, all right?” Conor said,
getting annoyed.

“Fine with me!” Jack said, putting his arm around his perturbed
girlfriend.

“Okay, good,” Conor said resolutely. “Can we all meet tomorrow at the
church at one?”

Everyone nodded in agreement.

“Good. See you tomorrow,” Conor said as the bell rang.
